authorkinda replied to your post “might go ham and make my charlie nonwhite out of spite so yall can...”
not to be rude just curious You say (to sum it up) that an artist is free to make the character whatever color then why be against the bully brother being white? I mean sure it's in the game that he tan, but I'm pretty sure in the books it says, Charlie is white(?) Again just curious as I see a lot of people on tumble turn white people black but offended when a black character is turned white.
whitewashing: the action of making a character way lighter or straight up changing them to be white to make them fit an standard (white people being unable to see a nonwhite character fitted for their eyes or acceptable unless they change it, or even other poc being colorists and making an otherwise darkskinned character lightskinned to fit a white standard of beauty)
nonwhite people making white characters nonwhite because they wish to see themselves more represented or others represented through a character is never the same as whitewashing, whitewashing harms people of color, it feeds the idea that they arent acceptable to be looked at, to have complex stories and rich lives and to be protagonists of their own stories, while the other just makes white people mad because they just really cant take that poc are having fun.
a white person whitewashing a black character is never on good intention, its malicious, it seeks a reaction most of the time, or even just done out of instinct, the good ol excuse of “its just the lighting!!!” to hide their lack of understanding on how they should really start learning to draw other skin colors besides pale beige.
