Magnoliids: The third largest group of flowering plants, with over 10,000 species. Magnolias, tulip trees, bay laurels (as in crowned with laurels, as in the spaghetti sauce leaf), black pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, avocados. Many species produce fragrant oils, including ylang ylang. MDMA (ecstacy) is derived from a chemical found in some Magnoliids trees.
Austrobaieyales: One of the basal clades of Magnolioiphyta, only rarely recognized before the 21st Century. Contains about 100 species of trees, shrubs, and lianas (woody climbing vines), including star anise, which in addition to being used for cooking and as a fragrance, prior to 2012 was used to commercially produce the flu medicine Tamiflu. Plants in this taxon are pollinated mostly by gall midges.
