In Australia, one of the largest Pride events takes place every year in Sydney: the Mardi Gras. In 1978, a protest for gay rights was violently broken up by Sydney police, who arrested and imprisoned many people. Echoing what had happened at Stonewall, many felt that the police had acted aggressively and treated the protesters unfairly. Over the months that followed, a series of protests about the way the police had behaved forced a change in laws, allowing queer people to be more open in public. One year later, 3,000 people marched through Sydney to mark the event and celebrate the changes. In 1980, a street party was organised alongside the march. This became the Mardi Gras, which is now one of the most popular Prides in the world.
