Austin Tice, a U.S. journalist kidnapped in Syria in 2012, remains missing.

Newly released documents suggest officials knew more than they said.

Missing Person

            Austin Tice is an American journalist who had previously worked as a US Marine Corps officer. He is from Houston, Texas, US.

            Tice, 31, was kidnapped in Syria on 14 August 2012 whilst reporting in Syria.

He heard conflicting reports coming from Syria, but due to lack of reporters in Syria he wanted to go to Syria and investigate and report of what was really taking place. He arrived in Syria in May 2012 and gained followers on Twitter. His reports on Twitter came to a stop after 11 August 2012.  

He was kidnapped from Darayya, Syria, with no more correspondence from himself or those who had abducted him. In September 2012, a video of Tice was released, in the video Tice is blindfolded and bound. The video only goes for 47-seconds. The Syrian government and local Islamic terrorist organisations have not come out regarding Tice’s abduction.

His family, friends, the media and the FBI have attempted to find information on Tice’s whereabouts and his fate. In 2018, Tice’s parents stated that they had received new information on Tice and said that they believe he could be still alive; but gave no further information. In 2022, President Joe Biden invited Tice’s parents to the White House, Biden stated that the US government knew that Tice was being held by the Syrian government.
