Little Slices of Death | aureolum
The moment he saw the last of his crew settle into the relative calm of cryostasis, the captain knew that there would be no turning back. They were no longer welcome on their home planet, had been forced to flee using one of the most advanced ships ever built at that time -- a DY-100 class sleeper ship. The only option left to him had been cryostasis, to sleep for, well, he didn't know for how long -- but it was long enough. They would slumber for an inumerable amount of years in the hopes that they would return, and things would have become... better. Then, and only then, could Khan Noonien Singh and his people return to the work they had originally been created to accomplish. It was with that tiny, tiny thought in mind that Khan had slipped himself into the cryochamber, lying down with his heart beating rampantly in his chest; its rapid dance betrayed his fear, though no one was conscious enough to catch the tiny little beats as it hammered away beneath his bones. It was enough to set the augment on edge, and as he forced himself to lay down, to commit himself to the dreamless sleep that would hold him prisoner for ... years, he found himself thinking of his crew. His family, his precious family. Then, everything became cold and everything became d a r k. The second he closed his eyes, something was rising beneath the surface of his mind again. Warmth, a slithery snake of heat curved its way into his consciousness. Ice and frost -- that was what Khan should have been experiencing, not heat, but that little inkling of understanding in his still-dormant mind found itself unable to comprehend that strange sensation. Fog rolled through his mind, preventing him from fully understanding what was occurring; something pressed against his ears, shot through his head painfully. Sound? Sound here? Voices. Asking questions, proposing answers. There were people aboard the ship? Something snapped, a little flurry of a heartbeat reawakening itself in his chest; a shudder as breath found itself curling in lungs that had not been in use for -- he knew not how long, only that each breath was painful. For the briefest of moments, eyelids flickered, a sign of life, and then sparks, raised voices. Something was w r o n g. Darkness was closing in again, encroaching on the little grasp of conscious thought that had graced the slumbering augment's being. Maybe things hadn't changed after all; maybe it was all a mistake, maybe he should go back to sleep... And then his eyes flickered open -- they must have succeeded in solving whatever problem had plagued them, because suddenly he was so very a w a k e and information rushed back into his brain as if a dam had burst, unleashing a deluge of data into his head. Each breath seared his lungs; the awakened augment squeezed his eyes tightly shut against the bright light, focusing on each breath, on the quiet breathing of the beings that surrounded him. He could feel their heat, their life, could hear the blood pulsing in their veins. A familiar, rhythmic heartbeat -- human. A whisper, faint, oh-so faint, makes its way out from between Khan's lips. A blond head leaned close to him -- he'd opened his eyes a crack, though not enough to get a good glimpse of his ... liberators. That whisper, that question, barely graced the air before his lips. "How... l o n g?"
