noah thinks he doesnât like body shots. theyâre a little ridiculous in theory.but when he looks at stephen, he realizes that he might love body shots.
heâs not sure how much heâs had to drink, but it must be a lot considering he agreed to this. thatâs how it was last time, too â a wide grin splitting his face, his head light and whirling with wispy thoughts. laughs bubbled up through his lips at the suggestion of it, and nothing had felt quite this good in ages, so he said yes. of course, it was tracey doing a body shot off of him the last time, and stephen could hardly stand a conversation with him then, and this night is definitely, definitely a thousand times better than that one for at least a thousand-and-one reasons.
stephenâs laying on the table and noah presses the shot into his hand and slips the lime wedge in his mouth before glancing down with a grin. â this night keeps getting better and better. â his breath is warm on stephenâs neck when he licks a long stripe. he sprinkles the salt carelessly. most of it missed and â
â missed a spot. â he leans back down, one hand on the side of stephenâs face as he presses messy kisses to the other side of his jaw. he doesnât bother adding more salt before he licks whatâs there off.
he tips back the shot quickly, and pulls the lime from stephenâs mouth. he winces slightly at the burn of the alcohol in his throat but he doesnât hesitate in offering him a sloppy smile.
he can still taste the salt and lime on his mouth as he leans in to kiss stephen again.

âOi! Enough of this firewhiskey nonsense. I need tequila,â Parvati slammed her fist forcefully on the surface of the drinks table, knocking over a few cups but hardly noticing in her current state. After scanning the surrounding area, she finally noticed what appeared to be a nearly-empty tequila bottle and grabbed it greedily.Â
âHey, care to join?â She caught the attention of the person standing nearest to her, which at that moment happened to be Stephen. âItâs only right that I do a shot with one of my wonderful hosts.â Parvati smiled, grabbing two plastic cups and divvying up the remaining tequila evenly between them. She handed Stephen one, and didnât wait for a toast or a cheers before tossing the other right back down her throat.
Hannah had originally planned on staying delightfully tipsy for the whole party, but somehow sheâd gotten to this point. It was the games, and the good company, and the way she kept getting thirsty. She didnât mind, not right now, that she was absolutely hammered.
She was hardly the only one.Â
With a bottle of â well, she wasnât sure what it was, she was making her way through the room, in search for the perfect body. Eyes fell on Stephen, then, and she grinned. âOi, cap!,â she yelled, moving over and looking him up and down. âLie down. I wanna do a body shot. You can take one from me once Iâm done.âÂ
And soon enough, Stephen Cornfoot lied on his back. Hannah pulled his shirt up, poured some liquor beneath his navel and moved quickly, licking most of it up and whooping. âHeck yeah!â A laugh burst past her lips then and she staggered, falling on a sofa ( half-deliberately ) and pulling up her shirt. âWanna have a go?â

This is it, Perks. Cornfoot. Your first real assignment. Youâve made it.
Sally-Anne can hardly breathe when Kingsley slides the manila folder across the desk to where she and Stephen are seated, and she hopes the feeling of ecstasy running through her isnât coming through too obviously to her boss. After months of training, years of grueling work to gain entrance to the program in the first place, this is finally it. Sheâs being given an assignment, no more sitting behind a desk while the other agents take on challenging and elusive targets in faraway places. For the first time, sheâs getting a chance to be in the thick of it all. To prove herself.Â
And thereâs no one sheâd rather do it with than Stephen. The two entered the same training class at the same time and have been inseparable ever since, motivating and pushing each other constantly to make it to where they are today. Heâs become her best friend over the span of the past few months, and sheâs confident that theyâll be able to pull off this assignment together. Sally-Anne looks over at him now, glad to see his eyes gleaming with the same excitement as hers.Â
She tries to give off as calm a manner as possible as she opens the folder and slides out the documents and photographs inside. The top page is a glossy black-and-white shot of a rather tall middle-aged man with dark hair and a hard face, a gristly beard specked with grey and eyes that look stony and emotionless. Stephen looks confused as he scans the photo, but Sally-Anne recognizes him immediately.Â
âYou want us to take out Albert Runcorn?â She gasps.Â
Sally-Anneâs mind whirls, barely registering Kingsleyâs slow nod. Sheâll never forget Albert Runcornâs face, the way he arrived at her front door that day to tell her that heâd had her father arrested for his crimes â âwhat crimes?â sheâd pleaded. her dad was innocent, she knew he was â and he needed to take her in for questioning. Sheâd sat across from him while he listed off the offenses of Jonathan Perks as though they were irrefutable fact, and watched him stand like a stone statue in that courtroom while they pronounced her father guilty. Sally-Anne still shakes with anger at the memory as she looks at this photo â but she canât let it show. Runcorn has investigated many so-called âcriminals,â Kingsley must not know that her fatherâs one of them; or else heâll surely take her off the case and assign Stephen a different partner.Â
âThereâs a black tie gala in Runcornâs honor tomorrow night, in his home. You two are going to infiltrate it, and find out as much as you can about him. What youâll need is leverage, some kind of way to worm yourselves into the inner workings of his organization. Then, youâll take him down from within.â While Kingsley speaks, Stephen is starting to look worried. Heâs gotten quite good at reading Sally-Anne, and he can tell thereâs something going on in that mind of hers. Somethingâs not quite right.Â
âRuncorn has a son. We donât know much about him, as he tends to steer clear of his fatherâs activities, but heâll be present at the gala. Perks, youâll get close to him and find out what you can, while Cornfoot, youâll search the house for Runcornâs files and information. Am I clear?âÂ
Sally-Anne nods her head. She is only slightly insulted that Kingsley seems to have chosen her for this assignment so that she could flirt her way into Runcornâs life through his son, but sheâs not going to complain. Sheâs determined now, she has to do this right. Success is the only option. Not only to prove herself as an agent â while still in the back of her mind, it feels less important now that she has a chance to avenge her dad; not to mention all the other innocent people Runcorn has jailed.Â
â
The next night, theyâre getting ready in Sally-Anneâs car. Sheâs done her hair sleekly half-up with perfectly curled tresses cascading down her shoulders, slightly covering the neckline of her low-cut gown. Stephenâs sharpened up with an elegant black suit and hair slicked neatly back, and he now looks over at her while she fiddles with the clasp of her pearl bracelet. He raises an eyebrow at her shaking hands.Â
âSal, is everything okay? You can always talk to me, you know.â
She glances up at him. They have a mission ahead of them, they canât be distracted by her feelings. Sally-Anne canât let them out, not here, not now.Â
âYea, mâfine,â she replies with a little smile. There really is no one sheâd rather be partnered with than Stephen. She reaches for his hand and gives it a gentle squeeze. âLetâs do this.â
â
The gala is crowded, far more crowded than either of them had anticipated â but it means theyâre able to sneak in easily and without suspicion. Sally-Anne walks arm-in-arm with Stephen, scanning the main entrance hall for Runcornâs son. Kingsley had showed them a photo of Noah â thatâs the name of the poor bastard who got Runcorn for a father, Noah â so that Sally-Anne could identify him quickly. Heâs not her type; but then again, very few men are. She doesnât have any problem with laying on the charm, however, and she can imagine sheâs speaking to a woman instead if necessary.Â
Stephen unlinks his arm from Sally-Anneâs after a few minutes. âIâm going to start looking for Runcornâs office,â he says in a hushed tone. âLetâs meet up by the back entrance in half an hour and see where we are, yeah?â
Sally-Anne nods in agreement and Stephen heads toward the stairs, leaving her to continue searching the room for the bleached-blonde head of her target for the night. A nervous feeling enters her stomach as several men she passes give her funny looks, as if they know she doesnât belong there. She wishes she and Stephen couldâve stayed together, she feels more vulnerable without him. More afraid.Â
Suddenly, she spots someone whose appearance cuts through her like a knife. Itâs not Noah â itâs his father, Albert Runcorn himself. Heâs holding a glass of wine and speaking to several other middle-aged men in identical suits, looking as though he could be at a business meeting rather than a party. Sally-Anne is flushed with hatred, her dadâs terror-stricken face after heâs pronounced guilty flashing through her mind once again. She thinks of her mother, too, the ongoing legal battle thatâs taken over her whole life in an effort to exonerate him. Sheâs wasting away, still, holding onto the hope that sheâll see him again, impervious to Sally-Anneâs and her brotherâs efforts to get her to live her life again. He wouldnât want you to live like this, they argue. No, no, what he wouldnât want is to be imprisoned by a power-hungry sociopath for crimes he didnât commit, she snaps back.Â
It all comes flooding and Sally-Anne needs to get out of the room, to stop herself from seeing red before she does something rash. She bolts, attracting stares from many of the galaâs invitees, finds her way to the bathroom, and as soon as she closes the door sheâs leaning over the sink and sobbing angry tears, ruining the makeup sheâd spent so long perfecting. A moment later thereâs the sound of the door opening and she can feel arms wrapping around her, pulling her into a tight, comforting embrace.Â
âWhatâs going on, Perks?â Stephen asks softly.Â
It takes her a moment to find the words. âIâm so sorry, I shouldâve told you before itâs just â my dadâs one of the people Runcorn put in prison. It happened about three months ago. I didnât say anything because I was worried Kingsley would take me off the assignment and I really want to do well, I need to do well, but seeing Runcorn out there just made me upset in a way I wasnât expecting.âÂ
Stephenâs arms loosen and Sally-Anne pulls back to gauge his expression, immediately relieved that he doesnât appear angry or betrayed. âYou donât have to apologize, Sally-Anne,â he replies. âBesidesâŚâ Thereâs a strange look in Stephenâs eye as he trails off, making Sally-Anne raise an eyebrow.Â
âWhat? What happened?â
He shuffles a bit awkwardly. âWell⌠I met Noah. Ran into him upstairs, he was avoiding the party. And, well â it seems like he hates his dad and everything he stands for. If we can play this right and gradually get Noah to help us, this assignment might be a lot easier on both of us.â
The news instantly brightens Sally-Anneâs mood. âThatâs brilliant, Stephen, dâyou know where I can find him? Hopefully a little batting of my eyelashes should do the trick to get Noah right where we want him.â
Sheâs surprised to see Stephen chuckle at this.Â
âSal, no offense â youâre beautiful, and I know that if you batted your eyelashes itâd work on a lot of the men at this party â but I get the impression that youâre not Noahâs type, if you know what I mean. Why donât, er⌠why donât I go find him again? I can say the right things and get some info out of him while you go looking for Runcornâs files. I really think Noah might be the key to bringing this guy down â no, Iâm sure of it.â
Thereâs a look in Stephenâs eyes that worries Sally-Anne as he speaks about Noah⌠itâs a gleam sheâs never seen before, a sort of excitement that she doesnât think has anything to do with their assignment. She bites her lip.Â
âAlright, yeah, letâs do that. Just⌠stay focused, okay?â
Michael is seeing green. Heâll never admit it, not even to himself, but watching Seamusâ lips move on Ernieâs skin -- even if it means nothing, or less than nothing -- sent him spiralling into equal parts boiling rage and unbearable nausea. Jealousy, really, is the word heâs looking for, but it leaves too bitter a taste in his mouth and ascribing it to Seamus of all people would mean the worst: that Michael actually, well and truly has feelings for him on some level beyond the physical. Itâs unthinkable -- so itâs a good thing Michael is almost too fucked to think -- and the only place his mind goes is retaliation.
He resolves to wrangle the first boy he sees into this desperate plan for attention. This happens to be Stephen, whoâs conveniently situated himself between Michael and the motley assortment of alcohol backed up against the wall. Michael makes his move, ostensibly a bee-line for their makeshift bar, but curls his arm around Stephenâs as he passes.
âCornfoot. Youâll do.â He tries not to look at Stephen like heâs about to be punched again, but itâs hard not to think of Stephenâs fists flying or the tense detention that followed. Michael is nothing if not determined, though, and doesnât wait for Stephenâs answer before steering him towards the booze.Â
âListen, I know youâre still supposed to hate me, or whatever, but given that everyone else is leaving their shit at the door I propose we do the same.â He fixes Stephen with a lopsided grin. âAnd Iâm thinking what better way than body shots, right? Here, you can go first.â Again he doesnât wait for what must be Stephenâs refusal, or at the very least reluctance, but to his surprise receives a Sure, what the Hell instead. Michael claps him on the shoulder and fetches the necessary paraphernalia. He glances over his shoulder to see if Seamus is within their line of sight -- just out of curiosity.Â
The salt goes on Stephenâs extended forearm, the lime between his lips as per tradition, and the tequila in a shot glass on his stomach -- because, you know, theyâre not fucking animals. Michael never had much of a taste for tequila, and that doesnât change now. He stomachs it, sure, licking the salt from Stephenâs skin and swallowing with a grimace, but he sure as hell doesnât enjoy it. He gingerly takes the lime and, finally, when heâs done, faces Stephen with a smug expression.
When the Hufflepuff and fellow DA member looks at her expectantly waiting for her to answer, Parvatiâs suddenly unsure what on Earth possessed her to choose truth. Itâs a loaded question he asks and itâs not one Parvatiâs sure she knows how to answer entirely.
âUm, yeah, I guess?â Parvati shrugs, âIsnât everyone jealous of their sibling every now and then?â she muses before laughing lightly, âI mean itâs pretty easy to be jealous of Padma-- sheâs smart, sheâs independent, and has this charm about her thatâs just so damn captivating. If anything I guess I alternate between jealousy and flat out admiring my sister,â she laughs, âI mean I would say Iâm jealous of how insanely beautiful she is, but in that regard, Iâll just thank my lucky stars we happen to share the same face.â
