 As I wrote this piece, I had a faint memory of a poem by Adrian Henri which used a similar metaphor. I was able to track it down – it’s ‘Red Card’ in an anthology ‘New Volume’ featuring Henri, Roger McGough and Brain Patten – fantastic stuff.

From a prompt ‘poiesis’ meaning creative power or ability by #AugustFalls20.

 At first, I felt unsure of how to proceed and turned for ideas to the paintings of John William Waterhouse. After I’d written the piece, I realised that this was a better match than I first realised. I remembered the connection between the Pre-Raphaelite painters and the Arts and Crafts movement of William Morris with its focus on the importance of handcraft.

This piece is written in rhyme royal, a form I’ve wanted to use for some time. The rhyme scheme is a-b-a-b-b-c-c and the metre is iambic pentameter.

This is a Finnish word meaning to evaporate or fade away.

I discovered that the dragonfly was a motif for Art Nouveau artists and this lead me to discover the work of the jeweller Antoine Lapparra. I’ve tagged this piece as being ekphrastic because it occurred to me that ekphrasis is not just to do with painting but any aspect of the visual and decorative arts.
