I observed him scan the area for a few minutes, stopping in one spot to survey that particular part of the water, then move on to the next. He was patient. He saw potential places to cast, but wanted to maximize his cast. He was calculating. And after he walked out to about waist deep, I watched him lay his net, then walk up to his beach chair, grab his cooler, and kick back a few cold ones. This was his getaway. This is how he spent his day. We talked briefly. I asked him if he saw anything worthwhile, and he smiled and said “not yet.” That’s what the islands do to you. There’s magic here; a friendliness and an acceptance you can’t find everywhere in the world. You can have a family get together, or you can share a romantic getaway with your lover, or you can meditate with the breeze on the sand, or you can swim with turtles, or you can lay net alone and just chill. On this day, I felt more spiritually connected and aware than I’ve felt in years.
