August 23, 2019 - Taylor's album, Lover, was released

With her fifth studio album 1989, released in 2014, Taylor transformed her musical style and public persona from country to pop. The album embraced a 1980s synth-pop influence, featuring heavy synthesizers, drum machines, electronic vocal effects, and dance-driven production. 1989 sold over five million copies in the U.S. within a year, cementing Taylor's status as a global pop icon. However, her rising fame was accompanied by media scrutiny, particularly surrounding brief relationships with Calvin Harris and Tom Hiddleston. In mid-2016, a controversy with rapper Kanye West over his song “Famous” sparked a wave of online backlash and an attempted cancellation of Taylor.

The controversies surrounding Taylor played a significant role in shaping her 2017 album Reputation, which embraced a hip hop-influenced sound and explored themes of revenge and drama. The album marked a stark departure from her former "America's Sweetheart" image, presenting a more defiant and confrontational persona. Reputation was also her final release under Big Machine Records, the label she joined in 2006. Taylor later described the album as a "defense mechanism" that helped safeguard her mental health during a turbulent period. She found the rejection of her previous image liberating, as it freed her from the pressure of constantly appearing cheerful and agreeable.

Following the conclusion of the Reputation Stadium Tour in November 2018, Taylor signed a new deal with Republic Records under Universal Music Group. That same year, she made her first public political statement by endorsing two Democratic candidates in her home state of Tennessee for the midterm elections. Reflecting on the tour, Taylor noted that her fans began to see her as a real, complex person rather than just a media-constructed image, which she said gave her life a deeper sense of humanity.
