Today didn’t even feel real

I remember being there shortly after the surprise announcement of the direct yesterday and joking about the potential for a new rhythm heaven game, saying things like “Manifesting a new rhythm heaven!!!! This is your LAST CHANCE NINTENDO >:)”

However, I have already accepted a long, long time ago that a new rhythm heaven will likely never come out. Many a time did young Elleon, at the peak of her rhythm heaven obsession, eagerly watch to see news of her favorite obscure little game series getting a new installment somehow, but equally have many directs come and gone without even a mention of it.

Although she still kept hope in her heart that one day, new content would release and she would have more to obsess over, slowly she started to be alright with it. Megamix seemed like the perfect send off to the series, being a compilation of (mostly) the best mini games. If final remix was to be seen as the final remix of the series as a whole, it would have been the perfect one, featuring the title themes of all the games that came before it (a detail that has, admittedly, made her cry before).

Though the series has relatively little to offer, the impact it made on her life is indescribable. The quirky minigames, cheerful songs, and whimsical characters were what kept her spirits up during a dark period in her life. No matter how bad things got, she always relied on watching her favorite minigames and remixes to cheer her up. It allowed her to develop her love for rhythm games and through that, she was able to meet many wonderful people. It revitalized her interest in creating things. It wasn’t a problem if the games were lacking any deep or complex characters, she was content with making up her own stories and interpretations of them. It was thrilling to take what little lore the games had and explore the implications of it. It was even more thrilling to share it with others.

All in all, to her, the four games were enough. They were enough to change her life’s trajectory and enough to sustain her obsession. This sentiment was felt even stronger as her fixation faded away and she became more of a casual fan. Not making as much content herself as before, but still enjoying the works the others have made.

And now cut to today, in the middle of a crowded table surrounded by friends. As soon as that familiar dialogue sound effect was heard, I screamed. I screamed not only because one of my favorite game series was getting a new game in over ten years, but also because it had just felt like the impossible just became possible. Would my excitement been even more powerful if this was 3 or 4 years ago? Definitely. However, even hours after the initial rush of excitement, my heart burns with such warm happiness I have not felt in a long while.

I remember a moment when little Elleon, after having finished a drawing of cosmic girl, started to smile and hug the paper tenderly to her chest. Although the drawing itself was quite amateurish and perhaps even juvenile, it was a drawing she made all by herself of a character from a game she adored so deeply. That was all that mattered to her in that moment. However, she suddenly stopped. She realized that one day, she might forget about how much she loved the series, only remembering it as a cringe memory. It may even come to a point that if a new game were to release, she wouldn’t even care in the slightest.

I just wanted to stop by to tell you that the phone actually vibrates when you pet Cerberus.
