They are not helpful for people with mild to moderate hearing loss, as there is usually enough hearing remaining to benefit from hearing aids. Candidacy generally requires that a person has little to no benefit from conventional hearing aids. The most common criteria include profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears, inability to understand speech even with hearing aids and having reasonable cognitive and language skills to benefit from the implant.
