An Ear Full Of... Buena Vista Social Club
If you've been to Ed's Salvage Co. in Jersey City then you've heard the sweet medley of tunes that drift through the air each Thursday through Sunday, rain or shine. Armed with a his collection carefully curated via Pandora, Ed blesses the neighborhood with a bit of everything from Gospel, to Bollywood House to Afro Cuban, which brings me to the subject of my current audio obsession: Buena Vista Social Club.
This legendary, Grammy award winning,Β Cuban ensemble has been creating their timeless Afro-Cuban sound since 1997. Amassing success and acclaim worldwide success; this is group is by no means a 'pop sensation'. Named for the members only club in Havana Cuba where musicians met, danced and played, the music stirs with mixes of acoustic Jazz, African, and Latin America rhythms.
Not unfamiliar with the Afro-Cuban genre of music (my father enjoys it and used to play it for my siblings and I frequently as children), I've become happily re-acquainted with the soothing, provocative and dynamic energy and vitality that lives within the the rhythm of the percussion and the scream of the horns.
If you're not familiar, I would highly suggest that you get involved! Listen here and let me know what you think!
