What are we looking for in our selected artists?
For artists that:
Are committed to making work in/for the Caribbean Diaspora Community (focused mainly but not solely in Brooklyn).
Are willing to share their audiences with DCC.
Will volunteer teach 1 workshop/lecture demonstration within a community space (i.e. school, community center).
Support the organizing team for the showcase through responsive communication.
Can submit a proposal for their workshop/lecture demonstration.
Perform work of 7-10 minutes at the festival
Are open to talking about their work at post-show discussion.
To present contemporary Caribbean dance works that:
Tell stories of our experiences today as a largely migrant body.
Push the boundaries of Caribbean Diasporic movement and performance practices.
Layer Caribbean cultural aesthetics within other forms or frameworks.
Address or present uniquely Caribbean issues or narratives.
Center the Caribbean voice within larger global issues.
What is the benefit of participating in New Traditions Festival 2017?      Artists receive:
Potential teaching opportunity in this season’s open class series.
Residency opportunity to continue the development of their work for New Traditions Festival 2017.
Feedback sharing at a mandatory in-process showing facilitated by panel of seasoned artists and advisors.
Advertising and marketing by DCC brand/social media machine.
Professional photo and video documentation of all performances and some season events.
How does the application process work?
Interested artists should provide a resume, short biography, statement of intent, and brief description of the work they wish to present. Pleasesubmit your application through Google Forms no later than January 15th, 2017
What is Dance Caribbean COLLECTIVE?
Dance Caribbean COLLECTIVE is an organization that is dedicated to bringing and facilitating Caribbean Dance works, performances and cultural experiences to the Caribbean Diaspora in the US with a focus on Brooklyn, NY. We are a representative body that promotes Caribbean Dance, Caribbean Dancers and those that present Caribbean content through their work. Our aim is to show a side of Caribbean culture that is not a part of the mainstream.
What is the New Traditions Festival?
The New Traditions culminating performance is a platform for dance artists working experimentally with movement, content and aesthetic choices, celebrating contemporary expressions of Caribbean Culture. New Traditions is so named due to the evolving nature of our culture and how we choose to represent ourselves. The artists participating in the festival will be primarily early and mid-career dance artists in addition to a featured work specially selected by the committee.
The New Traditions Festival 2017 will be a dance festival, running from June 16-18 2017, that includes: 3 evening performances, a post-show reception and discussion, pre-season events including Masterclasses, the Diaspora Dance Series, a Town Hall , and Collaborative Community Project.
