After Volkswagen merged with NSU, they made it part of their Audi division. The 1977 Audi 100 C2 KKM Prototype was an experimental vehicle developed by Audi to test a rotary engine (KKM 871) in a second generation (C2) 100, proposed as a potential successor to the NSU Ro-80 that had remained in production until 1977. Presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the rotary Audi 100 was not developed beyond the prototype stage.
