Just before Hei-Ran left for Fire Nation to join Rangi, Atuat came with her, she had to leave all her old life behind for this mission, as Hei-Ran's personal healer.

Hei-Ran is a clouded leopard and Atuat is a northen Inuit dog

i just know atuat had unconventional teaching methods that stressed kyoshi tf out

part 1 of 3 series of ideas i have about what happened in the month before kyoshi’s battle with yun

short comic on a bit of headcon i have of heituat which is that the two of them met briefly in their youth when hei-ran was still travelling with kuruk

basically kuruk and the rest of them got pretty badly injured whilst fighting in a raid against bandits near the north pole and hei-ran sought help at agna qel’a because it was the closest and surest way to get help for a critically injured kuruk.

young atuat was first on scene to stabilise kuruk and then kelsang and jianzhu before they were sent to be worked on by other healers.

atuat tends to hei-ran because the other healers are afraid of her. atuat is undeterred because… atuat.

bantering between the two of them ensues for a bit.

this would also be when hei-ran and jianzhu got to know amak.

anyways, i think young hei-ran and atuat would’ve been fast friends but in a constantly headbutting each other way.

but eventually as they grow older, they drift apart.

its hard to send letters via hawk-eagle to the north pole, so they dont really get to communicate much thereafter. (hei-ran only vaguely knows that atuat has opened hospitals and clinics through amak, but amak doesnt like speaking about his family much)

and then when hei-ran gets poisoned in the canon events, i’d like to think that she remembers atuat being an excellent healer from her youth and told rangi to try to find atuat when they reach north pole, betting on a slim chance that atuat might remember her (she does bc she is a filthy lesbian) and that atuat is still as great of a healer as she had been back then (she is, and in fact, even better)

i hope atuat commissioned that ink portrait she wanted and it looks like this (inspired by that portrait with the emperor from mulan)

how i imagine the first dinner at north chung-ling to have been like before the whole chaos happened

atuat is just immune to gross medical talk while eating (she forgets others are not)

hei-ran is immune because being ex-general in fire army probably made her see shit that unfazes her too
