Ninth Best Chance: Stuttgart
In most ATP tournaments there are 8 seeds, and when you run your favorite forecast model, most of the time (not always) those 8 seeds project as favorites for the quarterfinals. They typically also project as the favorites to win the tournament.
But what about the guy with the 9th best chance?
This week in Stuttgart it is a guy from just up the road, Maximilian Marterer (GER) via my forecasting system: a tiny 0.4% chance.
What he’s got going for him: He starts with Galovic, a guy whose only two career matches on grass were the two he just played in qualies to get into this main draw. The first seed he would face is Kyrgios, who may not be healthy.
What’s working against him: The same thing working against everyone: Federer, who is in Max’s half. He’s also got Feli Lopez in his quarter, who is stellar on grass. Not to mention Pouille, Raonic and Berdych on the other side, plus countryman Kohlschreiber, who owned Marterer in Munich two months ago.
