Chapter Six: Are We Meeting Friends or Enemies? It's a Bit Unclear at the Moment
“Shit, shit, shit!” Sonic said, grabbing Tails by the scruff of his jacket and yanking him backwards as one of the fighters landed in front of them, spun, and leapt up again.
“Language.” Tails said mockingly, rolling his eyes.
It was hard to get a look at the two fighters, both basically whirling balls of energy that occasionally clanged two keys against each other. They were practically tearing up the clearing as they rammed into each other, sending each other into trees or shrubs, only for their opponent to leap out again and continue the fight as fast as possible.
“Should we get out of here?” Sonic asked. “Or like… stop them?”
“I don’t think they’ve noticed us.” Tails observed. “Despite how talkative we’re being. They’re pretty hyperfocused on this battle.”
“You know, Ebony said that keyblade wielders were rare. And I’ve run into three in the last twelve hours.”
“Maybe that’s what the dog does.” Tails shrugged. “Sniff out keyblades.”
“Like the Heartless?”
“Dogs can’t be heartless, they’re too fluffy.”
“True. Just like you.”
“I’m not a dog.”
“Yes you are, you’re fluffy.”
One of the fighters then landed, square, right beside them in the dirt. Sonic got a slightly better look at her as she rolled onto all fours, letting out a growl, before leaping back at her opponent.
“Yeah, we should probably stop them.” Sonic sighed. “Wait here.”
“Wa– what? What are you gonna–”
Sonic raised his hand, summoning his own key, and immediately jumped into the foray.
“Yeah!” Tails threw up his hands. “I guess that works!”
Sonic kept an eye on the darting opponents, and then ducked and slid, managing to time his slide just right to trip them both up. As they stumbled back, he jumped inbetween them, raising his hands to try and calm them, but only really succeeding in hitting a low-hanging branch with his key.
“Everybody chill!” he shouted. “What is going–”
The girl who’d landed by him earlier let out a furious cry, and charged him, then, and Sonic barely managed to move his arm quick enough to block her attack.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa! I’m tryna help!”
“Stay away from me!” she cried, raising her blade to swing again.
At that, her opponent ran backwards, launched himself off a tree trunk, and leapt over Sonic’s head, landing behind the girl, knocking her blade from her hand, and dragging her backwards by her short-cut hair. She screamed as the other fighter knocked her to the ground, dropping himself in order to pin her down, pointing his keyblade at her throat.
As if oblivious to the danger, the girl kept attempting to kick or hit him as she screamed.
“Let go of me! Stop following me!”
“Quiet!” the opponent growled, moving his key closer to her.
Sonic glanced between the two of them, taking quick note of their appearances, then deciding to process later and solve the problem now.
“What is going on?” he cried.
The boy ignored him, still pointing the key at the girl. “Enough running.”
“I’m not going anywhere with you!” she said, still struggling to throw him off. After a second, she leaned over and attempted to bite his arm.
“What– stop that! How many times–”
As that distracted him just enough, Sonic ran for the boy and threw himself, using his weight to knock him off of her. The boy let out a yell of surprise, as did the girl, who quickly sat up, breathing heavily.
Sonic landed in the leaves, and pulled himself up, just a few inches from the boy. “Calm down! Look, let’s–”
With unnatural strength, the boy grabbed Sonic by the shirt, whipped him through the air, and slammed him against a tree. Sonic gasped as a sharp pain jolted through his back, his head spinning with the sudden shift.
“Who are you? Why are you interfering?” the boy asked.
Sonic opened his mouth to answer, then noticed something different about the boy before him, who had just pulled back his fist to threaten a punch. He glanced down to the hand pinning him to the tree– and, yeah, it wasn’t just holding him there.
“You have knuckle spikes?” Sonic asked, eyes wide. “That is so cool!”
The boy’s face went from one of anger to one of utter bewilderment.
Sonic glanced between the boy and the girl, the latter of whom was still getting up to her shaky feet. They were both young, the boy maybe a little older than him or perhaps a little taller, and the girl several years younger than either of them. They both seemed to be both equally athletically-built, and both had similar darker skin tones, but that was about where their physical similarities ended. The girl’s eyes were a flashing, bright green and boy’s a deep purple; the boy had very long, loose dreads of crimson that fell down his face as he looked down at the girl, while the girl had simple natural curls that barely reached her shoulders, with bangs falling into her eyes, a bit too long, like she’d forgotten to trim them recently. Both wore clothes of red, streaked with dirt and slightly torn– whether from the fight they’d just been in or from several prior, Sonic had no idea.
“Answer my question!” the boy said again, drawing his fist back in preparation.
“Yo, there’s no need to fight!” Sonic said, trying to raise his hands in defense, only for the boy to grab his rising hand and pin it back. “Ow, ow, ow! That wasn’t necessary! Look, I’m sure we’re all friends here! Hi, I’m Sonic. What’s your name?”
The boy, once again, looked completely baffled. But before he could even think of a reply, he was suddenly knocked away from Sonic as a furious, flying, two-tailed orange ball of fur slammed against his head.
“Tails!” Sonic shouted, eyes wide, as he watched the boy shout and struggle to get the fox off of him. The little animal was nipping and hissing, scrambling swiftly around his shoulders and ducking to avoid his swinging arms.
Sonic raced forwards, desperately trying to keep the blur of a fox in view, before he once again ducked and kicked, tripping up the boy; just as the boy began to fall, Sonic leapt back up and grabbed at Tails, managing to wrap his hands around his stomach and yank him back. The fox continued kicking and spitting for a minute as Sonic stumbled back, trying to calm down the kid.
As he did, the girl finally sprung into action, grabbing her keyblade again and pointing it at the boy on the ground. Hers was different than his and Tails’ as well; both her handle and blade were thicker, giving it the impression of a heavier weight, and the pointed blade– two outer lines forming a diamond shape to a fine point, and one pointed shape filling out the middle gap– was decorated to look as if a twisted, thorny vine encased it, with the tooth of her key on the end of the vine, poking out from behind the blade into the shape of a fancy rose. The swinging chain on the other end simply held a long hexagon as its charm, like a little gemstone.
“Stop following me!” she cried.
Before anything more could happen, though, there was a deep, guttural screech from somewhere nearby.
The group all turned to look through the trees, already seeing rustling leaves reacting to a shake in the ground as something very big and very mad approached.
“Heartless!” Sonic gasped. He reached up, putting Tails across his shoulders, and pulled his blade out of the air again.
The girl said a swear under her breath. As she did, the boy beneath her kicked up, knocking her blade from her hands, before using his hands to launch himself up, landing on her and pinning her down again. She reacted fast, headbutting him in the chest and pushing herself away; in response, the boy gave her a long, weary sigh, and then got to his feet and ran.
“What the–” Sonic said, watching as the boy completely vanished.
“Fucking coward.” the girl spat, before rolling her eyes. “He’s probably hoping the Heartless will get me. Well it’s not gonna, you hear me?”
Then she let out a cry of surprise as she was suddenly thrown through the air, as if by invisible force, crashing once more on the tree behind Sonic and dropping hard to the ground.
Sonic whipped his head around to check on her, then back to see what had thrown her. For a moment, it looked as if there was nothing there, as if she were thrown by the air itself. Then, slowly, it faded into view.
Much more brightly colored than the last shadows he’d fought, this Heartless was identical to a giant, furious chameleon, streaked in bright yellows and greens that made it a bit hard to spot amongst the trees, even without the invisibility shield. Most disturbing though were its eyes, which were a fiery, bloodshot orange.
“They can look like that?” Sonic shouted.
Tails twisted himself and leapt off his shoulders, landing on the ground in human form. “What do we do?”
The Heartless began charging, so Sonic cried, “We duck!” and pulled Tails swiftly to the left, out of reach of the creature’s pounding feet.
But instead of turning to face the boys, the creature instead stopped right above the girl, still dazed beneath the tree. She looked up, only centimeters from its terrifying eyes, and she screamed, trying and failing to back up, only succeeding in pushing herself further against the bark.
Sonic was running before he even realized it, already close enough to the chameleon-heartless to grab onto its tail. He yanked it back, and as it turned, he held out his hand and summoned his blade once more. He slammed it against its side, but unlike the shadows, it didn’t disappear immediately; instead, it whacked him with the tail, sending him flying. As he rolled on the ground, jumping back to his feet, he saw Tails leaping at it from another side with his own blade, hitting it back. Sonic then raced forward and began striking it from the other side.
Deciding that Sonic was much more annoying than the girl against the tree, the Heartless whipped around and tried to swipe at him with its claw-like hands. Sonic ducked, rolled, and struck at its underbelly, assuming that would be weaker. While it did let out a cry, it still didn’t break.
As he got back into the open, he saw Tails had leapt onto the thing’s back, and it was trying to buck him off. Holding tight, though, Tails was gripping to its back spikes. Sonic turned quickly to the girl against the tree, who was still a bit dazed, and was staring at him with an expression he couldn’t place.
“You’ve got a key, right? How do we beat this thing?”
She just stared at him some more.
“Hello?”
She blinked, and then muttered, “Um, fire spell. Thunder spell.”
“What?”
The complete and utter bewilderment in his tone seemed to only confuse her more. “Just… do a spell? With the keyblade?”
“We can do spells with this thing?”
“Just… Thunder, or Fire.”
“Cool, cool, cool.” Sonic shook his head, then turned to Tails. “Buddy, fly off?”
“Okay?” Tails said, wagging his tails. He only flew a few inches up before quickly speeding back to the ground, but he was already seeming to get the hang of it. The girl gasped at the sight, while Sonic just stepped back, pointing his keyblade.
“Okay, uh… Thunder!”
Nothing happened, and he had to duck away from a charge again.
“Point it up!” the girl shouted.
“Like… Thunder!”
Sonic pointed his blade up, and then let out a screech as something coursed through his body, starting from his chest and racing up to the hand clutching onto the hilt, bursting through him in just a few milliseconds. Suddenly, several streaks of lightning appeared out of nowhere, dropping from the sky and hitting the ground around him, only appearing for a second. Two or three of those strikes hit the chameleon, who once again bucked and screeched.
“What the fuck?” he shouted.
“We can do that?” Tails cried.
Sonic slid across the grass, then pointed his blade at the chameleon again, and shouted, “Fire!”
That same energy, from his heart to his hand, but this time it was distinctly warmer, somewhat slower. And then a ball of fire formed from the tip of the key, bursting forwards and hitting against the chameleon, which fell back against a tree.
“How are you doing that?” Tails called.
“I don’t know!”
The chameleon then lowered itself to the ground. For a moment, Sonic thought it might be finally giving up, but as he saw its knees bend, he realized it was preparing to lunge, and so he dropped and rolled just as it leapt, dodging it completely. The thing then turned, hissed, and vanished into the air.
“Shit!” Tails cried.
The girl started to get to her feet, crying out, “Put up a shield, it could be anywhere!”
“We don’t have a shield!”
“What are you talking about, of course you–”
“Everybody shut up!” Sonic shouted.
As they went quiet, he stepped back in the grass, then shut his eyes.
Nature always had a lot of sounds. Animals scampering over roots, leaves blowing in the breeze. But there was a pattern to it, a rhythm of the forest. And… there, behind him. A heavy crunch, then another, coming closer.
“Fire!” he cried, whipping around, and the burst of flame hit against the Heartless a few feet away. It once again let out a shriek, and became visible again, reeling onto its back feet. Sonic once again looked to its underbelly, seeing a black mark there, similar to a heart, or perhaps a lock. Whatever it was, he charged and began striking against it repetitively.
“Just… die… already!”
Tails launched himself forwards, using his tails to propel himself high enough to slam his blade against the thing’s head. It turned, snapping at his feet, only for…
BAM.
From just beside Sonic, the girl leapt into action, shooting a blast of something out of her blade– air? Perhaps a gust of air?– which knocked it back a few steps. She then leapt higher than Sonic thought possible, onto its head. She then held out her blade again, calling out, “Magnera!” From the direction her blade pointed came flying several leaves, loose branches, and a thick vine. The girl held tight to the creature’s horns, reaching for the vine, and Sonic’s eyes widened as he realized her plan.
Glancing at the Heartless, knowing the gears in… whatever kind of brain it had… were definitely turning. He wasted no time, then, rushing forwards and under the chameleon’s feet. It let out a confused squeal as Sonic tripped it up, effectively distracting it enough that it didn’t think to throw off the girl until too late.
The vine reached the girl, and she grabbed the end, before sliding down the monster’s face, and yanking the vine under its chin. She turned, then, to the flying Tails beside her, and said, “Tie this for me, will ya, kid?”
He nodded seriously, looping the vine until it formed a circle under the chameleon’s head. From there, the girl leapt from it, sliding down the vine as Tails dropped it. As she hit the ground, she ran to the end of the vine and yanked, pulling it tight enough to choke the thing out. Sonic wasn’t sure if these things breathed, but even if it didn’t need to intake air, the looped vine would certainly hurt it enough to break something.
And sure enough, Sonic saw the shadows begin to form at the Heartless’s hand. He raced back, throwing his key into the air to disappear it. Tails caught his movement and dived as well, lifting the girl and himself onto a high tree branch, as the chameleon toppled and crashed against the ground.
There was a bit of a rumble, and then everything felt too still, as Sonic realized the battle was over. His body hadn’t quite picked up on that, though, as adrenaline coursed through him, his hand twitched as if preparing to summon the blade once more, and his breath shook his tense limbs. But after a second, as the shadows collected around the chameleon, dissolving it into the air, he started to relax his shoulders. He looked up to the tree at Tails, who was starting to lower himself down. Once he was on the ground, they stared at each other, and then…
“That was so cool!” Sonic cried.
He ran to Tails, picking him up and spinning him. Tails let out a victorious holler. “We did it! We did it!”
“I summoned lightning!”
“That was amazing! We’re gonna have to study that. I wonder how–”
“And fire!”
“We killed a monster too! It was, like, huge!”
“I didn’t know they could get that big!”
“I didn’t know you could kill one that big!”
“We did it, little guy! The three of us did it!”
“Aw, I didn’t–”
“Nope! You hit that thing a buncha times! Congratulations, Tails the alien fox-boy, you killed a Heartless!”
Tails laughed again as Sonic stopped spinning them, running a hand through his hair. “Holy shit. That was…”
“Amazing. I wanna do that again! Let’s kill a thousand of these bitches!” Sonic said, jogging in place for a second to get out his sudden burst of energy. “Let’s set em all on fire and watch em turn to smoke!”
“Yeah!”
“Watch out, Heartless, you gotta face the dream team of Sonic and Tails… and…”
Sonic blinked, then turned to the girl, who had just slid down from the tree, brushing dirt off her skirt. For a few moments, he’d forgotten she was there. “Hey, what’s your name?”
She was still staring at him with that weird expression. And for some reason, Tails quickly reached over, gripping Sonic’s arm incredibly tightly and pulling it closer to him.
“Hello?”
The girl still stared at him. “You… saved me.”
“Uh, I guess? I mean, you did pretty well against the Knucklehead and that big lizard, so I’m sure you would’ve figured out–”
She practically launched herself across the clearing, throwing her arms around him in a tight hug; he stiffened at the sudden contact, and Tails let out what sounded like a hiss.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
“Uh…”
She pulled away, her green eyes sparkling. “You actually saved me? Why would you do that? Especially when you’re clearly a newbie. But… wow, you’re really good for a newbie! You just… did Thunder without practice? And how did you hear the Stealth Sneak coming? You killed a Stealth Sneak and you don’t even know how to put up a shield, you’re amazing!”
“I understand maybe half of those words.” Sonic said.
“Where did you train, though? You don’t know spells but your combat is impressive. And your little brother– he’s real young, isn’t he? Why does he have tails and you don’t? Did he turn into a fox earlier when he attacked Knuckles? Can he do that a lot? Can you turn into anything? Why didn’t you? Why–”
“Whoa, whoa!” Sonic held up his hand to gesture for her to quiet down.
Tails, beside him, muttered “Little brother?” quiet enough that he could barely hear it.
“I… don’t know what you’re talking about?” Sonic said carefully. “I’m just, you know. Doing what I can. Following my instincts.”
“Wow.” Her eyes seemed to widen even more. “You’re already in tune with your own light.”
“People keep using a lot of funny words around me, huh?”
Tails clung harder to his arm. “Who are you?”
“Oh! Sorry.” the girl started to bow, thought better of it, held out her hand for a shake, thought better of it, and then awkwardly curtseyed with her frayed skirt. “I’m Amy Rose of Nowhere Inparticular, apprentice of… well, the Keyblade. What are your names?”
“I’m Sonic.” Sonic said. “And this is Tails.”
She waited a moment. “That’s… all?”
“Yeah.”
“You guys don’t have… last names? Worlds? Titles? Anything?”
“The orphanage gave me the last name ‘Prower.’” Tails said.
“Whoa, you got a surname?” Sonic said with surprise. “We didn’t even get that, there weren’t enough people on the island for it to matter.”
“Island? You come from an island? I love islands. I love beaches.” Amy said, running closer to him– a bit too close, like she had no idea what personal space was. “What’s your world called?”
“Destiny Islands, I guess.” Sonic said. “And, uh, Tails…”
“Green Gate.” Tails said. He let go of Sonic, only to shift into fox form and skit about at Amy’s feet, sniffing her intently.
“Oh! Wow, he’s so cuuuute!” Amy squealed, kneeling down to pet him. Tails flinched back at first, hissing threateningly, but very quickly realized he liked the attention and dropped to the ground, raising his arm for a belly rub. “Oh, who’s a good little fox? Who’s a good boy?”
“And your world is Nowhere Inparticular?” Sonic asked, leaning against a tree.
“Um, no. I’m a world-hopper. I guess you could say I’m from the Chao Gardens, or the Land of Departure. Or the Gummi Ship, really. Anything you want.” She brushed a strand of hair behind her ear, giggling slightly as she looked up at him.
“Um, okay?” Sonic said. “You seem to… know more stuff than we do. Do you know other keyblade people?”
“Other wielders?” Something flashed across her face, another emotion he couldn’t read, but it was gone in an instant. “Uh, no, I dunno where to find em.”
“The red guy found you.”
“Pfft, he’s always following me. Been trying to kidnap me for weeks.” she waved her hand, saying this in a worryingly casual way.
“Who is he?”
“Good question. His name’s Knuckles and he’s not really killing the Heartless, kinda more using them to attack me. Doesn’t seem super fond of them himself, though. Weird kid. What about you?”
“Well. I have no idea what’s going on at all.”
Amy stopped petting Tails and sat on the leaves, looking up at him. Tails then moved to Sonic, waiting until he too sat down and then curling up in his lap.
“I… my world went crazy yesterday, and my friends disappeared. Tails and I have been following this dog.”
“Dog?”
“Golden retriever, I think? Name’s Ozzie.”
Her eyes widened for a second, and then she quickly lowered her face to the ground, blocking him from seeing any expressions. “Cool.”
“Yeah. We, like, barely know how this whole keyblade thing works.”
“Really? You seem to hit with it pretty well. I’m really good at hitting with it, too.”
“Yeah, you really gave Knucklehead and that Heartless a run for their munny, didn’t ya?”
“I guess I did.” she brushed her hair back again. “Sorry I wasn’t much help with the Stealth Sneak at first. The hit across the clearing messed me up for a bit, and then, you know… you were…”
Sonic didn’t know, but he just shrugged. “Maybe we should take you to a doctor? You might have a concussion.”
“Concussions aren’t real, adults just say that to keep you from having fun.”
“I like that.” Sonic nodded, glancing down to see the little fox on his lap giving him a glare. “But, yeah. You, uh… you said you’re from other worlds, how did you get here? Maybe we can get back to a medic.”
“Oh, the Gummi ship. It’s a little ways away, I’ll show ya. Maybe you’ll be better at driving it than me, I keep crashing into the most backwards worlds…” she started, then, and looked up. “Oh! I am looking for someone. Have you seen a little girl, a bit younger than Tails? Brown-orange hair in high pigtails, has a chao with her at all times?”
“A what?”
“You… don’t know what a chao is?”
“I don’t know a lot of things, apparently. Can we speed up the learning process by you taking us to wherever you came from?”
Her eyes once again darted to the ground, before she leapt up to her feet. “Sure! Let’s gooo!”
She grabbed Sonic’s hand with surprising strength, lifting him to his feet so fast he barely had time to scoop up Tails with his free hand. Then she took off, racing through the woods, a bright skip in her step as she did. Sonic ran beside her, slowing himself down so as not to outpace his guide, as Tails wagged his tails and let out a little giggle.
As they ran, Sonic glanced down at the fox in his hands, who had his eyes closed and was enjoying the feeling of wind flying through his fur. He turned, then, to look at the little girl; Amy, she said? This girl apparently had a way to hop worlds. That would work out great for finding Shadow and Sally. Perhaps the dog led them to her for that reason, so she could help him find his friends again. Or maybe the dog had brought them here just to give her a helping hand. She’d seemed to be dealing fine with the attacker, but, well, anything could have happened…
As he watched her stumble over a turn in the road, he noticed that she was short– well, no, she was probably the right height for her age, just a head shorter than him right now. She was really young, probably eleven or twelve. Too young to be shrugging off attempted kidnappings and deadly battles.
Guess we’re all doing that now, though, so who am I to judge?
They slid to a stop as they reached a large tree with drooping leaves. Amy pulled Sonic farther, using her free hand to push the leaves aside.
“That,” he gasped, eyes wide, “Is not a ship.”
“Yeah it is.”
“How’s that gonna sail?”
“It doesn’t go on water, silly.”
Tails leapt out of Sonic’s arms, excitedly barking at the base of the “ship,” before turning back into human form, his tails still wagging so hard he lifted a few inches. “This is so cool!”
The “ship” seemed to be made out of… mainly blocks. It looked like it was made of those wooden blocks the little kids on the island would play with, haphazardly glued together, with a pointed nozzle, large square center, and weirdly-shaped fins on the side. There was a blue spherical dome atop the square, seeming to be made of see-through glass. The only thing impressive about it was its size; it sure was the size of a boat, but… didn’t look a thing like one.
“It’s… weird.” Sonic said finally.
“It’s awesome!” Tails cheered, ducking under the fin for a second. “Are these actual Iwerks engines?”
“Well! I don’t know.” Amy said. “Vec can tell ya when we get back, I’m sure. Well, half-sure. Welcome to the Gummi Ship! It’s the only way to reliably travel between worlds.” Amy leaned against it, smirking and clearly trying to look cool.
“What makes it able to do that?” Sonic asked, still a little confused.
“Gummi block exterior.” Amy explained, knocking on the ship’s edge. “Material that falls upon worlds as soon as their doors open.”
“Their… doors?”
“Mm-hmm.”
“Right.” Sonic nodded slowly, then glanced to Tails, who had just run up to him. He knelt down, whispering, “Okay, I think she might be nuts.”
“Absolutely not, this thing is awesome already!” Tails cheered. He whipped around to the girl. “Can we go inside?”
“We’re gonna have to if we wanna get out of the Boscage.” Amy said. She then did a specific tap-tap-tap on the side, and the glass sphere suddenly cracked in the center, sliding back into the ship’s interior.
“Whoo-hoo!” Tails was the first one in, letting his tails lift him up to the top of the ship and then dropping inside; Sonic could hear his excited shouts even from where he was standing.
“And, like. What do we do in this?” Sonic asked, carefully touching the ship’s nose.
“We fly it.”
“Fly? Like a bird?”
“Come on, beach boy.” Amy shrugged, hoisting herself up onto the side of the ship and beginning to crawl her way up the side. “You just saw the fox-kid fly. If he can do it, why can’t the wondrous technology of… actually, I don’t know who made the gummi ships. Gonna have to ask Vec. Come on in! You can sit by me.”
She slid inside, and after a hesitant second, Sonic moved to the side of the ship, finding handlebars placed to lead up to the hole atop.
“Well, done weirder today.”
As he fell into the ship, he looked around at the strange room inside. On every wall was some kind of technological gizmo, ones he couldn’t even hope to identify. At the front of the room, a large screen spread across the wall, showing a map of what he assumed was the forest they were in. Amy spun on the front of the five chairs, positioned in a triangle-shape in the front-center of the room. Tails, wagging his tails too much to be able to settle back to the ground, was asking a load of questions with a load of words Sonic did not know. Amy didn’t seem to know either, as she just hmm ed and flipped a few switches.
“Okay,” she said, “You’re gonna wanna buckle your seatbelts if it’s your first time in a gummi ship.”
“Seatbelts?”
Tails flew over to Sonic, pushing on his shoulder to make him sit on a chair, and he then grabbed a black strap from the top corner of the chair and pulled it down to the side, clicking it into a lock.
“It’s so you don’t go flying into a wall if we crash.” Tails explained.
“Is that likely?”
“Meh, maybe a 60-40 chance.” Amy waved her hand. “I’m not great at flying this thing.”
“Huh?”
“Can I fly it?” Tails asked, eyes glittering.
“Lemme get us to base first, little dude. Buckle up.”
Tails sat across from Sonic, strapping in the buckle and bouncing in his seat, his tails thumping against the chair’s back.
“Hold on, can you repeat that 60-40 thing? Like, is crashing the 60 or the 40?”
“Maybe a 75-25.” Amy shrugged, flipping another switch.
“Which number is crashing?”
“And here we go!”
With that, there was a sudden push, and Sonic stared in shock as the screen in front changed from a map, to a window of what was in front of them. And if the window was correct, they had just rocketed several feet forwards, and now they were heading several feet up. In just a few seconds they had passed the trees, into the sky… which turned to blue streaks, pushing against them and swirling around, like they’d run into a one-color kaleidoscope. And then…
Stars.
It was like the night sky was now streaked with bright cyan and royal indigo, rather than the normal pitch black. No, that wasn’t right– it was like they’d flown right into the Northern Lights he and Sally had read about. And around the ship, around this entire space, were sparkling, shimmering stars.
“I’ve been calling this place the Ocean Between.” Amy shrugged, before spinning her chair so she could beam at the boys. “Or, wait, how bout this? The ‘Sea of Other Skies.’ Pretty cool, right?”
“It’s awesome!” Tails squealed.
Sonic couldn’t tear his eyes away from the sight. “It’s beautiful.”
“Yeah it is! Now hold on. We’re pre-set to get back home but I’m still gonna have to land it once we get there. Landings are kinda the hard part.”
The ship shook slightly, as the window began to brighten.
“And there we go! Hold on to something!”
The ship then suddenly dropped, and Sonic and Tails screamed as they took a sudden dive through the stars, into the light, and out of control.
To absolutely nobody's surprise, epilogue part 2 has now breached 16k words and has become way too big for a single chapter. So, with very little convincing, I've split it up again.
This is the penultimate chapter of ATNH. One more, and FINALLY we will be finished!
