Hiiii Remember when I said I wasn't going to write anymore of the ATKH universe and then wrote that olympic blurb but then said I REALLY wasn't going to do anything like that again? Well I guess I really lied because I just wrote another little ATKH oneshot. This takes place sometime between the end of ATKH and the Olympics. Fictional!Matty and Fictional!George are not back together yet, but they are very friendly again and moving in that direction. Shout out to all of the kids and teenagers that were part of the wild post Thanksgiving pony carnage at the barn this morning - y'all inspired me. (Thankfully Pop was absolutely perfect and we had one of our best lessons in a while!)
ATKH Post Thanksgiving Blurb
George winced, and forced himself to smile for the parents watching from the viewing deck. He was teaching a lesson in the front ring, while Matty rode and Jamie taught in the back. He could hear Jamie yelling, and the scuffling of hooves as a horse clearly scrambled. He turned his attention back to Adeline and her pony, wincing again when he heard Jamie shouting for Matty to get on. He hoped that Adelineâs parents werenât listening too closely to what Jamie was shouting.Â
I swear to god Dora, either stop throwing your body, or I will ... I guess Iâll just DIE!
George closed his eyes and turned away from the viewing deck, letting his smile drop. He wasnât sure if being in the back ring with everyone would be better or worse for his blood pressure. Probably worseâ he was sure that Jamie would be shouting for him to get on horses as well.Â
It was the day after Thanksgiving, and all of the horses were fresh. Normally, they wouldnât try to jump school them after a day off, especially as the weather turned cooler and everyone started feeling frisky, but with them scheduled to leave for Thermal on Sunday, they didnât have a choice.Â
âGood job Adeline!â George called, working to keep his tone upbeat and positive. Usually, Polly worked with the pony kids these days, but with her out of town for the holidays, George and Matty were splitting her usual load. Matty had worked with the kids all morning, and now it was Georgeâs turn. Billie and Phoebe had been extremely pleasant in the back ring this morning, George wasnât entirely sure how things had devolved so quickly. Ross had gone back with a lunge line nearly an hour ago and had yet to return.Â
He took a deep breath. Just a few more hours he thought grimly, they just needed to make it a few more hours.Â
âOkay Addy,â called George to be heard across the ring and over whatever carnage was happening in the other ring, âI want you to pick up the left lead canter and I want you to get all the way into the corner like we talked about, and get super, super square to the pink jump, then, youâre going to be super straight on the backside then when you get to the rail youâre going to turn right, a big corner, and canter the jump with the flowers then halt straight alright?âÂ
Adeline nodded and George said a silent prayer to a god he didnât believe in as she picked up the canter.Â
Please be straight so we can be done, George thought almost hysterically, he had forgotten how trying the younger kids could be to teach.Â
âNice job!â said he called as Adaline jumped the first jump. She might not have been perfectly straight and center, but it was the best he had seen from her all afternoon. âDonât change your canter, just stay nice and steady through the turn!âÂ
Of course, George had barely gotten the words out and Adeline spurred Frostie. The pony bucked and next thing George knew he had a sobbing seven year old sitting in the dirt and a small pony, that there was absolutely no way he would be able to get on to school, running around the arena in celebration of his newfound freedom.Â
He just sighed, thinking of the beer he had stashed in Mattyâs fridge that morning. He was looking forward to having one more than what was probably considered healthy.Â
*
âWe survived,â said Matty, throwing himself down onto the small couch in his barn apartment. George had let himself in earlier, and he wasnât hiding regardless of what Waughy might have teased him about when he had been caught sneaking in.Â
âBarely,â George said, reaching over the small coffee table to hand Matty that glass of wine he had proactively poured him.Â
âAdaline got bucked off Frostie,â George said after a moment as Matty accepted the wine glass and took a large swallow, some of the tension now leaving his body. He hadnât even bothered to take his boots off, still wearing them and his spurs, his legs splayed out in front of him. He had lost the baseball cap he had started the day in hours ago, leaving his curls hanging sweaty and damp around his face. George was pretty sure he had seen it hanging in a tree in the front ring.Â
Matty winced. âDora fell off Keke and I thought that Jamie was going to have an aneurysm, then I got on Whisper, because she was fucking wild and Bonnie was doing fuck all about it, and then Bonnie got back on so I could ride Diego, but then Jamie fucking got on her because Bonnie was still doing fuck all and he wanted to make a point.âÂ
George winced, Jamie hardly rode anymore, between the rod in his back and his knee, and if he was getting on Whisper of all horses, he must have been pissed off enough to be really looking to make a point.Â
âBillie was really good this morning though?â George said, the words coming out like more of a question.Â
Matty nodded, taking another large gulp of his wine. âYeah, thatâs what Jamie said, that she and Ava are the only two he didnât want to murder today.âÂ
âWell, the good news is we get to do it all again tomorrow?â George said and Matty groaned.Â
âIâm lunging all of them in the dark tomorrow morning, I canât do this again,â Matty whined, âI rode fourteen horses today, fourteen horses, Iâm not even going to be able to walk tomorrow.âÂ
George grimaced, the nine he had ridden that day very much paling in comparison.Â
âIâll come help you,â George promised, anything to avoid another repeat of today.
Matty smiled, his real one, the one that lit up his face and reached his eyes and Georgeâs stomach flipped. He had been seeing that smile of Mattyâs directed his way more and more frequently these days, and he absolutely loved it.Â
Author Note: I finally finished this after announcing I was going on a writing break.... well. Please, please, PLEASE give me some feedback because I need to know if I should keep with the break or not - I basically just need some reassurance because things are so quiet lately... Enjoy lovelies, hopefully this shines a new light on Kingâs actions throughout JK !!
Things in N.City had been quiet for some time now - at least for you that is. God knows the rest of the city had fallen into shambles, but for the most part people knew that King was the boss. The main guy. The big kahuna. Sure everyone else was at each otherâs throats all the time, but nobody dared mess with King. He was a living legend in the city and people knew better than to try and challenge that. So, youâd all allowed yourselves to get comfortable in the silence.
King had grown comfortable with his makeshift family; you were all his children and he cared for each of you more deeply than anyone would ever know - or that heâd ever let them know. He knew you all like the back of his hand, which is why he noticed almost immediately when something was off between Rikky and Johnny.
Subtle glares and snide digs were nothing out of the ordinary, teasing relationships and juvenile fights were typical for your close knit group; but this was different. There was an underlying resentment between the two as they shot each other accusatory looks over the course of the evening and King didnât like it.
âEverything okay with you and Rikky?â King asks nonchalantly when Johnny comes over to join him in the Kitchen, âThings seem frosty.â
King watches carefully as Johnny pours himself a glass of water and avoids eye contact - something was definitely up.
âIâm not sureâŠâ Johnny confesses, keeping his eyes trained on Rikky in the other room, watching as he play wrestled with you for the Tv controller, âI have a hunch, Iâm keeping an eye on it.â With that, Johnny finally turns to King with a strained smile and heads back over to the rest of you.
It was unusual to say the least; but if Johnny was concerned about something then King would pay attention. He had brought Rikky into the crew, given him a home, welcomed him into the family - he trusts him. But he also trusts Johnny. He trusts his judgement and if he thinks something is wrong, then King was going to pay attention.
---
It took all the strength King could muster to get him to take those steps towards you. The pouring rain clouded his vision, leaving your sunken figure a blurry image in front of him. He could hear in your voice when you had called just how broken you were, it scared him. Scared him so much that he almost didnât want to come, he didnât want to see what had ripped into your heart and left you kneeling in the pouring rain. Right now, seeing you curled over Johnnyâs limp body, rocking back and forth and whispering pleas for him to wake up - King wishes heâd stayed back.
Does that make him a coward? To want to run and hide and leave the rest of you to deal with the fall out of whatever horrors had struck? Maybe⊠maybe thatâs all he was deep down, just a coward with a tough reputation and a stare that could break a man. Even with all the evil, harsh, bloody things King had done in his long and miserable life; never had he felt the kind of pain he feels now, looking down at the pair of you. Johnny and you are his children; the first people he decided to let into his family; the first people he let into his heart. He had saved you, raised you and in the end, broken you - he was the one that brought you both into this life after all.
The sound of your sobs echo in the empty streets. The grey sky and heavy downpour of rain makes the scene in front of him blur together like an abstract painting of tragedy. Each passing second King can feel pieces of his heart being chipped away. One piece washes away with the blood from Johnnyâs lifeless body; another with the flow of tears down your cheeks; each scream as Ty pulls you away claims another shard.
It doesnât make sense. None of the other gangs had any reason to attack like this; no one had any problems, and if they did, they would have spoken to King first. How did this happen? Why did it happen?
Johnny.
He mentioned something was wrong. He had suspicions. Looking back, King watches as Rikky stands motionless a few feet from the scene. His expression void, not a single tear stains his face, he barely makes an effort to move at all.
King feels something in his gut drop at the thought. Could Rikky have really done this? Hurt Johnny⊠Kill Johnny. Why? What had made Johnny suspicious of him before and was it really worth killing over? King had brought Rikky onto the team and if he had anything to with this, he would never be able to forgive himself.
---
At this point King is almost certain of Rikkyâs involvement in Johnnyâs death. After doing some digging and getting intel from reliable sources; King was finally starting to figure out just who Rikky really was. But now there was Mark.
An innocent looking, wide-eyed kid without an evil bone in his body. He put his life on the line to protect Y/N on a whim, when anyone else in N.City would have looked the other way. Another innocent soul set up for Rikky to slaughter. King would never want to make him go back alone, Bangtan would have his throat in seconds, but he also didnât want there to be someone else that Rikky could hurt. He canât ignore the sacrifice Mark made for Y/N; his whole life was now at risk. We protect our own. Mark was one of you now and King couldnât; wouldnât; leave him. It was just another person he needed to protect, even if it ended up being the last thing he did.
---
The loud ringing of alarms blaring through the firehouse is what startles King awake. The sound of you all shouting and fussing in the main room is what sets the alarm bells off in Kingâs mind. The firehouse is supposed to be impenetrable. The fact that Rikky had somehow managed to trick the systems and remain undetected is a frightening enough thought for King to shut down; go into âboss modeâ; devoid himself of all emotions to keep you all safe. He needed to act fast.
There still wasnât any clear reason as to why Rikky would turn against you all like this, why he would kill Johnny⊠All King knows for sure is that Rikky is dangerous, and with how quickly he seems to be attacking, there arenât any signs heâll stop.
---
How did he get here yet again? Standing in front of you, watching the tears run down your face as you beg him for a reaction. He canât. God how he wishes he could. With Ty gone, the only way King was going to beat Rikky was if he was at the top of his game - meaning he was as hard and ruthless as ever.
He could try and get you to leave, but he knows you wouldnât leave without Ty. Inside heâs panicking, youâre not safe, Mark isnât safe, Ty isnât safe - and this whole time Rikky is right there beside you, pointing the finger at him.
âGet out of the city Y/N. Take Mark and run.â He takes a step closer, reaching out his hands for you, but you step back, âRun as fast and as far as you can. Please loveâŠâ
âDonât call me that,â
â..Y/N, Iâm begging you. Leave N.City.â
âTy is missing. God knows where Rikky went. Unlike you, I wonât abandon my family.â
â-
Out of all the people in the world, Walt is the only one King would let his guard down with. He could sit and tell him everything and know there would be no judgementsâŠ. Well, none that King would take to heart.
Waltâs is as good as empty; there was the odd customer coming in to pick up a donut to go or two; but other than that it was just Walt and King. Sitting opposite each other in the usual corner booth, mulling over the events of the last few weeks.
âI found Rikky funnelling money out of one of my accounts,â King explains, feeling a rush of catharsis finally being able to talk about it all with someone, âHeâs been messing with the clubs, handing over assets and suppliers to Bangtan under the table⊠He was right there in front of me this entire time.â
Walt watches his friend with heavy sorrow as King throws his head in his hands, trying to discreetly wipe away the tears that slipped through his lashes.
âIâm worried about the kids. I donât even know if Tyâs alive. I tried to get Y/N to leave the city but of course she wonât go without the others, without Ty. What if he hurts her Walt? What if he does to her what he did to Johnny? What if I really canât protect them from this? What ifâŠâ
âStop that right now!â Walt interrupts, âYou need to fight King! Youâve never backed down to anyone who was threatening your family before, and youâre sure as hell not going to start now with some arrogant, cocoa-drinking jackass!â With that, King finally finds it in himself to look up at his old friend. âTake care of your family King! Y/N and Mark are strong kids and Ty, Tyâs a fighter...literally. They need you to be there to lead them.â Reaching out, Walt places a reassuring pat on Kingâs shoulder, looking him in the eye, âSo go and lead them.â
---
The next day King got a tip from one of his allies about Ty, taking off immediately to try and find him before Rikky and Bangtan could do anything more. Sneaking in through a back door, King makes his way through the warehouse, careful not to make any noise that could alert someone to his presence.
King had no idea that when he pushed his way through the last door, heâd be faced with Tyâs hanging and broken body. The sight enough to make him gag on the spot. Ty, his friend; his family; hanging lifeless bloody broken like the puppet Rikky had turned him into.
Somewhere in the distance the sound of gunfire echoes, drilling into Kingâs brain and warning him that thereâs not much time left. He canât get Ty down on his own, not without ripping his flesh open and King could never get himself to do that.
Behind him, King hears the door behind him slide open and instinctively moves for his gun. Turning with the barrel raised, aimed at whomever had walked in behind him. He didnât expect to see you and Mark, standing frozen at the sight of him next to Tyâs hanging body.
âOh my godâŠâ Mark whispers behind you as he continues to looks at the mangled body of Ty next to King. Instinctively, he reaches out for your arm and pulls you behind him protectively.
âWhat have you done!â you scream, unable to keep it in.
Thereâs no time for him to explain. No explanation that could ease the hurt looks of betrayal on your faces. Tears fill his eyes and his hands begin to shake as King tries to find the words, but he never gets them passed his lips.
He sees Rikky walking up slowly behind the two of you; he watches the smirk spread across his face as the scene unfolds in front of him. The subtle wink he sends his former saviour across the final stage of his big production. Rikky has won. King couldnât save you. Itâs over.
I VOTE DOING ONE OCTOBER PROMPT OF EQUESTRIAN MATTY & GEORGE BTW
So, I told myself (and you all) I probably wasn't going to write anything else in the ATKH 'verse unless it was maybe some kind of prequel one day. I have however, had this idea rolling around in my brain for the last few months and after getting this ask I said fuck it. It might not be one of the October Prompts, but it's technically a request / prompt fill? IDK it's short but it's here, so enjoy a little peek into the future lives of Equestrian / Horse Boy Fictional!Matty and Fictional!George from the All the King's Horses universe. I'm sorry it's short!

July 2028.
George could practically feel the anxiety radiating off of Matty as he walked Sally from the warm up ring to the arena. He had warmed up well, both he and Sally forward and seemingly confident. It had been a surprise to see just how visibly nervous he was when they began the trek from the warm up to the arena, Matty nearly trembling in his show coat.Â
George was a few paces behind him, letting him have a moment to converse with Jamie, likely going over the final plan for the course. Ross was off to the side as well, ready to wipe Sallyâs nose and shine Mattyâs boots one last time before he entered the ring. George swallowed hard. He couldnât believe that they were here, he couldnât believe he had made it. But at the same time, they had, and Matty had worked hard for it, and George knew he deserved it.Â
âHey,â said Jamie, gesturing for George to come closer, reaching out for the water bottle that George was holding so he could give it to Matty. He nodded in thanks, handing the dented yellow hydro flask up to him. Matty smiled, accepting it with a small thanks as Jamie held onto Sallyâs bridle. Â
âGood luck,â said George, Sally was pawing at footing in the ingate, clearly annoyed she was being forced to stand quietly, âand have fun.â
âThanks,â said Matty, his voice small, rough with nervousness, like the word had gotten stuck in his throat, and he had struggled to dislodge it. He took another sip from his water bottle and handed it back down to Jamie who gave Sally a pat on the neck.Â
Lana exited the ring, flashing George and Matty a smile as her grooms rushed forward to clip a lead rope onto Normanâs bridle, the stallion prancing as he made his way down the aisle.Â
âTime to go,â said Jamie, giving Sally one last pat. Matty nodded, swallowing hard, as he shortened his reins and trotted into the arena, leaving Jamie and George behind at the ingate. THe crowd cheered, Matty and his comeback story becoming something of a fan favorite within the equestrian community, his tarnished reputation shined and Sally earning her own fanclub.Â
They had shown in Temecula more times than George could count, they had shown in every ring at Galway Downs. Matty had shown more classes in this ring in particular than George even wanted to try and recall. But he knew that it was different this time, a red and blue coat on Mattyâs shoulders, an American flag on his saddle pad and Sallyâs bonnet. The expectation of a nation weighing him down as he faced off against the five Olympic rings.Â
The buzzer went off and Matty picked up the canter. The announcer was introducing him to the crowd, going over his and Sallyâs biography but George didnât hear a word the announcer said, despite having the bio memorized, having spent nearly an hour laying on their living room floor helping Matty write it. They approached the first jump, a large and colorful oxer. George smiled. Matty was an Olympian.Â
