I recently made some post cards from moments I captured in my travels to Atencingo, Mexico last year. Who wants me to send them one?

The Saturday of Light The burning sugarcane fields glow in the distance as the Sábado Santo, or Holy Saturday, mass was taking place at the parish in Atencingo. These pre-harvest burns would normally take place in the mornings at 4am to avoid the hot sun and mitigate the severity of the heat that workers would be exposed while working in the fields. Apparently this nighttime burn was an “accident” and wasn’t supposed to happen until the next morning, so we found out about it as we saw the fire out from the church, and consequently ran through the streets trying to find a path to the fields so that we could catch it in time. The purpose of these burns is also done primarily to get rid of the excess leaves, or “trash” as it’s called, to reduce the amount of labor and equipment needed to harvest the sugarcane and deliver it to the factories for processing. This also helps get any unwanted pests like poisonous snakes and rabbits out of the fields before workers go in to cut all the cane down.
