Most would have been easier. Perhaps the hour does demand The Warrior, but to wage war at such a distance... Do you need to see each atom burn? Do you need to see the barrel of your gun reflected in the very glint of our enemies' eyes? Must you see the foe disintegrated in front of you to be certain that one less abomination blights the world?

2nd edition 40k fucking sucked so bad my friends & I all almost quit the hobby about a week before 3rd ed. came out. The Good Old Days were mostly horrible and nobody should persuade you otherwise. Nevertheless, because it’s when I used to actually read White Dwarf, this style of terrain is kind of entrenched in my mind as the Warhammer 40,000 experience of record.

Nowadays of course it’s super easy to see that the death world flora are just styrene balls with toothpicks in them and the hills are fat slabs of foam board covered in flock, but something about the wildly stepped hills & spherical poison cacti of this era (garnished with a load of aquarium plants) really came across as a profoundly alien landscape - or at least it did if you were a kid in suburban England, your experience may vary.

Anyway, all that is why the bases for these sneaky elveses start off with a bunch of teeny tiny stepped hills and nice rounded boulders. It just makes a good feeling somewhere in my brain. I’m using dyed lichen instead of the aquarium plants, but hopefully it gets a similar feeling across.
