Gorillaz, “Plastic Beach”

Like any band, Gorillaz have their own colorful backstory. To make it quick: at the end of the story for their previous album, Demon Days, the band’s guitarist, Noodle, was shot down by a group of fighter planes on her peaceful floating lighthouse island. The narrative for Plastic Beach picks up some time later: Noodle (who is still alive) was replaced by a cyborg lookalike, drummer, Murdoc pissed off Bruce Willis, and they find themselves on the artificial Plastic Beach, which is depicted on the album cover.
The concept of the album was that this island had formed due to all of the garbage and waste collecting in the world. This theme is heavily represented in the album, on songs such as the title track and “Superfast Jellyfish.”
The cover for Plastic Beach, unlike the band’s previous covers, was not an illustration of the band. This time, Jamie Hewlett’s concept for the band’s new home studio was brought to life by Asylum Studios, who constructed the island in a 50,000 gallon circular water tank. The model was 4 meters tall and provided incredible detail. This wasn’t only for use on the album cover: numerous promotional videos were used to tease the album and the Plastic Beach was a huge component of the band’s interactive website.
Four different album covers were made for various formats to show the Plastic Beach at various times of the day. The standard cover was dusk, the deluxe “Experience Edition” was night time, the deluxe iTunes edition was twilight, and the Japanese and vinyl edition covers represented daytime.
