Ash was born in Japan but spent most of her life in America due to her father's job. It was only recently that she was forced to move back to Japan for that same job. She knows some Japanese, but not too much about kanji or kana, causing her to struggle with communicating and school.
Despite this, she's quite a popular student. She's a team leader, very charming, and often flirtatious, with many of the female students having crushes on her. She's the leader of the sports club, favoring track over all other activities. Taro is part of the sports club and is often found flirting back and forth with Ash, but there's nothing romantic, simply Taro trying to learn from the master. As Ash helps with flirts, Taro helps her with kanji and kana.

The rivals will never come, let's be honest. So here I am reviewing them as a writer. Buckle up, I'll tackle all 10 of them. We'll give them all a rating and then calculate the arithmetic mean to see how "good" of a writter Pedodev is.
I will automatically take 5 points from a character rating because (except with Osana) their actions aren't shown in-game. The attitude, acts or behavior can tell us a lot about the characters, but with yansim rivals they are just "she's nice", "she's mean".
Osana: 10/10
Why? Sure, she might not be the best character, but from a writting standpoint, she is the best. She has qualities, flaws, internal and external conflict and actions, language and behavior that indirectly characterizes her.
Amai: 3/10
Just qualities no flaws. Boring. And she doesn't do shit in the story. Give characters flaws, those are sexy.
Kizana: 6/10
Gets a pass cause she's a bad character and makes sense for her to only have flaws.
Oka: 2/10
Overloved by fandom. She has like flaws but damn, she just seems uninteresting. Also, from her, I expected qualities. After all, she's a club leader.
Asu: 3/10
Litterally same story as Amai
Muja + Mida: 1/10
Do I even have to explain? Even from a writting standpoint they are dogshit
Osoro: 8/10
She gets a high pass because she has both qualities and flaws and there is some known lore to her. Probably my second favorite. Also bonus point because she has a major flaw that overshadows the good ones. I am a sucker for these characters
Hanako: 3/10
Bro, she is the ebodinment of the word 'cringe'. I'll never stop hating on her clingly possesive ass.
Megami: 4/10
What do we have? Little miss Waa Waa I have bad past but everyone likes me yet still I'm sad waa waa. Cry me a damn river. At this point, I'm just biased. Only one bonus point because she is important.

If you are going to make a video game with lots of characters, try to make them compelling
Everyone remembers how when Osana Najimi was being developed it seems her most popular elimination method even with YanDev himself was rejection. Kaguya Wakaizumi canonically gets eliminated by Ryoba through *rejection* and it got me wondering.
What if there were a āLike mother. Like daughterā achievement in YanSim where the player defeats the 202X rivals in the same way that Ryoba canonically eliminated the 1989 rivals?
Like Osana gets rejected, Amai gets burnt, Kizana gets crushed, Oka is poisoned, Asu drowned, Muja gets electrocuted, Mida gets fired, Osoro gets her reputation more ruined than it already was and leaves, Hanako gets matchmade and Megami is befriended
Of course this also includes having a pristine reputation and nobody witnessed your crimes or your rivalās deaths with Amai through to Muja
And after Megamiās befriend scene ends the player would get a rare achievement for being just like Ryoba was in 1989
