3. Describe the creative process of writing a chapter/fic

HAHAHAHA oh god. Um. So a lot of the time, a fic for me will start with either an idea just lodging itself in my brain and refusing to go away or (more often) a snippet of text — I've talked in the past about how I'm heavily aphantastic, so that's kind of my equivalent of a mental image, I guess? — whether it's a fragment of a scene or a bit of dialogue. When I'm trying to brainstorm out a fic, I usually have the vaguest skeleton of an idea (a basic premise, a beginning and an end and no idea of how I'm getting there, etc.), and then I'll just start writing pieces and seeing how they fit together like a puzzle.

I'm far more pantser than I am plotter, even when I try to plot, and things tend to get out of control and veer off in directions I didn't anticipate if I end up writing at length. There's been at least one story that I started which ended up becoming something entirely different from what I had originally planned. I do sometimes write straight through, usually for shorter pieces.

Editing is usually about two things for me: continuity and copy editing. Because I tend to braindump, I've got a habit of reusing words, and that drives me a little bit nuts. Continuity includes "does this make sense?", because when I'm just braindumping suddenly [x] that fit here is no longer logical when [y] happened there. In the writing process I send up connecting the various fragments I have, and sometimes during edits there's a need to revise or add because oh, that piece is wrong or now belongs over there or whatever — this is one more reason why I tend to save fragments: because sometimes a thing I thought didn't fit now does.

One final habit I've started to pick up is reading the fic through aloud, because I've noticed that helps me catch the stupid minor mistakes that drive me nuts. I ended up with several 3am sessions of this last HEX, but dry throat aside, it was pretty helpful.

(I don't usually do multi-chapter, unless it's breaking up a longer piece; with the rare exceptions where that applies, I prefer to write the whole thing before posting because I don't trust myself to finish it over time, but I wouldn't say I have a particularly different process there. Continuity just gets a lot trickier. The last multi-chapter piece I wrote ad hoc, I had a vague idea of where I was going to end it by the time I hit about halfway, and things zagged but still got to the general endpoint, even if it didn't look quite like how I'd originally planned.)

... well. That got longer than I expected — sorry!

55. Of the characters you write for, which is your favorite? Has that choice been swayed at all by your followers/readers’ reactions to certain ones?

I am always terrible at picking favourites, and this is literally no exception. I do think my writing habits are somewhat influenced by comments, because responding to enthusiasm is always easy, and I know there are things I write with certain people in mind even if they don't end up as gifts or whatever, whether it's a conversation or just the thought that they'll enjoy this particular idea or whatever. I do tend to be a serially monogamous fangirl with rare deviations, which may explain why Fate has retained its chokehold on my brain, but as for which character ... oof. I like morally complicated and emotionally fucked-up characters, which is literally each and every one of the Fate adults, so no wonder I'm having trouble picking one?

I didn’t quite have the time to put together some quality whump for you but I thought I’d at least share the other fic I started for my HEX before I changed course. It’s based on, I believe, your own prompt idea of how Farah comes back in s3: 

Maybe he should burn this place. A fresh start. Andreas burned down his house. Maybe he’ll burn down Farah’s office too. Then he’ll stop being fucking reminded of her.

Yeah, right.

The liquor cabinet is unlocked; he’s sure the spell died with the old hag but it’s not like he had the chance to try until now. Between Luna clawing up his ass and Bloom leading a trail of chaos in her wake, his bones feel like he hasn’t stopped moving in a week.

He pours himself a double shot, then adds a third. It’s not like he’s driving tonight. Even if he doesn’t pass out at this desk he can at least stumble to Harvey’s cottage and sleep there. Slowly he twirls the glass, lifting it to catch the light that spills in the stained glass window from the outdoor lights that line the training pitch.

He halfheartedly raises it into a toast before stopping halfway up. There’s no one left to toast. Sky, maybe, being patched up by Terra and likely Bloom somewhere he doesn’t deserve to know. Harvey himself, out there somewhere. Him, Saul, for somehow making it through tonight.

I kind of blame the effects of helicopter parenting for a lot of what we're seeing here.

Idk what is the cause of it, but this here is a sure sign of ‘everyone must cater to me and my wishes rah rah rah why do get people to do things differently than I want???’

I read all the spoilers here, and then deleted the movie without watching. I don’t need the aggravation.

I have seen snippets of some spoilers and I am beginning to realize what happened and I am just confused as to why they would ruin a brilliant show with that...
