"Have you ever k" She cringed and cut herself short. The question was out of her lips before she could process what she was saying actually meant. She had to get a grip before she slapped herself in the face after asking such a deep and personal question to someone she barely knew.
There was silence, once again. One that felt cold and distant; expectant, even. She felt herself growing smaller by the second.Β You ruined it. You had one person guiding you through this and you ruined it with them. Congrats, add that to the list of people you've hurt this week, she thought.
"I have." The voice of the old man cut through the noise in her head like a knife through vegetation. She looked at his shadow, cast in front of her. The Captain was looking up at the sky, it almost looked like he was reminiscing. His voice sounded heavier than earlier, devoid of that joyful nature that seemed to surround him. It made her skin crawl. Still, she forced herself to ask a second question.
"How many?"
"I don't believe the answer will make you feel any better." He said, shutting her down in a gentle manner. "A life is a life."
Dee played around with a few grass strands she'd taken out of the ground by her side, splitting them into pieces.
"I felt them in there, with me." She said, looking off in the distance as she remembered the cold feeling of the blood all around her.
"That's good." Kaplan nodded. "Proves you've got a good heart."
The girl scoffed, dumbfounded. "How?"
