ASL basics
In ASL (American Sign Language), signs are generally used to represent ideas and concepts rather than words. Because one sign may signify a number of ideas, appropriate facial expression and body language are essential in order to convey the full meaning of the sign.
Fingerspelling is used mainly to indicate people and places.
Signs can be arranged in various word orders to form sentences in ASL (i.e. “I am happy” maybe be signed as “I happy I,” “I happy,” or “Happy I.”) Definite and indefinite articles (a, an, and the) are not signed. There is no distinction between the different grammatical forms for nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. For instance, “happy,” “happiness,” and “happily” are all signed exactly alike, so the appropriate meaning must be determined from the context.
