What do you think of the ideology of Social Democracy?
If we have to be stuck in a capitalist hellscape its a way better alternative than unrestricted free market capitalism. Social Democracy is about incorporating social programs and investments like universal health care, pensions, free post secondary education, investments to reduce poverty, etc, to make capitalism suck less and help people.
But the problem with social democracy is it maintains capitalism. It can be a good starting point in my opinion of helping people while at the same time getting the public used to and supportive of socialist ideas (through redistributive and universal access social programs), so that eventually social demographic governments can shift to more socialist policies (or elect more left parties) without the public freaking out.
The NDP is a Social Democratic party, and they support things like free post secondary education, pharmacare and dental being covered in the healthcare system and large investments in things like poverty reduction and mental health.
If there was a more socialist political party in Canada that was electable I’d vote for them instead of the NDP. But the NDP is at least pushing positive left policies that have the potential to help a lot of people, even if the party isn’t as left as I would like.
Do you think social services is going to use the information that stats canada gets from the banks to see how the people using their programs are pending their money?
