“Beebee, how do you tell someone that you love them?” Shinsou asked with a very specific person in mind.
“Well, that depends,” Hizashi answered. “What exactly do you want to convey to this person?”
“I want…” Shinsou paused and held his breath for a moment, wondering if what he wanted to convey was a bit too embarrassing. “I want to tell them that I trust them and that they’re special to me.”
“I’m assuming you don’t want to tell them this exactly the way you’re telling me, right?”
“I was hoping you could tell me some action I could do to convey what I want to say.”
“Hmmm,” Hizashi thought for a moment. “Hitoshi, has Shouta ever told you how he proposed to me?”
“I thought you were the one who proposed,” Shinsou admitted. “Mostly since you’re a lot more open with your emotions than Dad is. It’s why I decided to ask you for advice about this.”
“I’m certainly better at talking about my feelings, yes, but there’s no one better at showing how much he loves someone as Shouta. He may not talk about those sorts of lovey-dovey feelings, but he feels them, and his actions tell you everything.”
Shinsou nodded.
“So I think Shouta may have some answers for you. Be sure to ask him about his proposal.”
“I will, thank you.” And, with that, Shinsou went to find Shouta.
“Hey, dad, how do you tell someone that you love them?” Shinsou asked.
“Hizashi’s better at this sort of thing,” Shouta answered, deadpan as ever.
“I asked about it first, and he told me to ask you about how you proposed to him.”
This made Shouta go red.
“Well, uh…” Shouta brushed back his bangs. “I sang him a song.”
“What song did you sing him?” Shinsou asked. It was difficult to imagine Shouta singing at all, much less what was probably a cheesy song.
“Outlaws by David Lambert,” Shouta answered.
“So maybe I should sing a song…” Shinsou mumbled.
“What?”
“Nothing, just continue your story.”
“There’s not really much to tell. I sang that song to Hizashi, and then I proposed to him. It was a good compromise between Hizashi wanting a more romantic proposal and me wanting to make a private proposal.”
“How did Hizashi like it?”
“He couldn’t stop crying.”
“Were you crying?”
“...Maybe a little.” Shouta answered. “But, listen, I do love Hizashi a lot, and I love you too, even if I don't say it as often as I should.”
“...I love you, too, Dad.”
After that conversation, Shinsou went on to search for a song to sing for Iida. Obviously, he did a bit of research by himself first, but, once he couldn’t find a song on his own, he went to the one person who knew more about music than most everyone else.
And that person was Hizashi.
However, Shinsou didn’t exactly want to go up to Hizashi directly, so, instead, he called Hizashi’s radio station while he was taking calls.
“Hello, Listener! What do you want to know?” Hizashi, currently on ‘Present Mic’ mode, exclaimed during the advice portion of his show.
“I thought it would be romantic to sing a song for my boyfriend, but I don’t know what to sing him. Do you have any suggestions?” Shinsou asked. There was absolutely no doubt that Hizashi didn’t know who just called him, but he still treated Shinsou like any other listener. After all, Hizashi wouldn’t want to obviously play any favorites.
“That is romantic! I’m a little jealous over here. I’d love for someone to sing for me like that!” Hizashi laughed, gleaming over the fact that Shouta proposed to him like that and that he knew exactly where Shinsou got the idea. “But, as for suggestions, it depends on what exactly you want to convey to that person!”
“I want to tell them that I love and trust them,” Shinsou admitted, silently hoping that Iida wouldn’t be up listening to tonight's radio show because it would ruin the surprise.
“Well, there are a few that convey that, like Always by Panic! At the Disco or John Legend’s All of Me. There’s also the song Something to Believe In by Tall Tales & The Silver Lining or Stand By You by Rachel Platten. And, if you want something more classic, I’d go with either Unconditionally by Katy Perry or Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling In Love.
“Sorry if that’s a few more music suggestions than you were bargaining for, but love’s a special thing, and I’m sure you want the absolute perfect song to sing!”
Shinsou hummed.
“Thank you.” He said, and then he hung up. He did actually write down the songs, so he carefully listened to each of them to see if he liked any of them, eventually settling on Something to Believe In by Tall Tales & The Silver Lining.
He practiced singing the song a lot. He didn’t go to the trouble of learning how to play an instrument to go with the song, but he did try his best to hum the nonvocal parts.
Shinsou wasn’t exactly the best at singing, but he hoped Iida would appreciate the intent behind it.
“So, uh, I want to sing you a song,” Shinsou said, already feeling anxious about singing. He was sure that Iida wouldn’t judge him for how good or bad his singing may be, but that didn’t stop him from worrying about how the song would go. “So, I guess just sit back and relax and listen.”
Iida nodded, and Shinsou took a deep breath as he thought of the first lines.
“Love me. You’re all I ever needed. Your love-” Shinsou began. “-is something I believe in.”
Shinsou hummed the few notes in between the lyrics.
“And every breath is like a song, and every song is sweet and true. Our love- is something we belong to.”
Shinsou couldn’t help but think about how much Iida had supported him in being a hero and in most other things as well in a way that no one else had.
“We get older, some get lost and done. Some get colder, some get walked upon. Somehow in the passing day today- we find a way to save.”
Somehow, it was the second time he sang the chorus that caused him to become embarrassed, and his voice got a bit quieter, but he committed to singing this, and he might as well finish it.
“Love me. You’re all I ever needed. I was locked out, but now I got my key in.” Shinsou continued. “And every step along the way, has led me back to you. Our love is something we belong to.”
It was at this point when Shinsou found himself smiling softly and with complete and utter love for Iida, and he could see a flustered Iida look away when Shinsou gave him that look.
“We get older, some get lost and done. Some get colder, some get walked upon. Somehow in the passing day today, we find a way to save.”
Shinsou hummed through the short intermission, wondering for a moment if it was weird at all that he was just humming instead of singing the lyrics, but he soon found himself going back to the chorus of the song, this time with a bit more confidence after seeing how Iida was affected by this.
“Love me! You’re all I ever needed. Your love- is something I believe in. It’s something I believe in.”
Shinsou sang the last few “It’s something I believe in’s” of the song before finishing, glancing up at Iida to see what he thought of the song.
He found that Iida was crying, and he immediately freaked out.
“Oh god- Tenya! Are you okay?” Shinsou fussed, hovering his hands over Iida, unsure of whether or not he should lend a comforting touch or if it would be better to not touch him at all.
Iida pulled Shinsou into a tight and crushing hug that made it kind of difficult to breathe if Shinsou was being honest. But Iida soon let Shinsou out of his aggressive embrace and gave him a watery smile full of love and affection, and that smile honestly made Shinsou weak in the knees.
“That- that was so beautiful and sweet, oh my god, Hitoshi, I love you.”
Shinsou relaxed when he found out that Iida was crying out of happiness.
