It'd burst out of him all of a sudden. It'd be a night when Lois worked late, and he'd wait up for her. She'd probably get in the door, and tell him he should've gone to bed. But John would shake his head, and he would be tired, half-asleep, but he'd say, "And miss the opportunity to welcome you home and say goodnight?" He'd barely even be aware of it until she looked at him. And he'd look back at her, and it would happen. "And I love you."

It would shock her and she wouldn’t be expecting it but he’d be the first of them to say it. She’d look at him and she’d be frozen but slowly she would smile and then she’d kiss him and she would tell him that she loved him too before asking him to take her to bed because she’d just want to spend the night in his arms and she’d tell him that she loved him again and again.
