Hello, Daisy ! Oh dear, a lot like fear mongering as tarot does have many misconceptions. In my experience, I have not encountered any evil entities (and I doubt I will). Any unwanted energies during a reading are related to our consciousness and awareness. We don't "control" spirits during tarot readings, rather we tune into the energies around us and work with our intuition to receive and interpret messages. Spiritual energies can be accepted or rejected, so if anything makes you uncomfortable feel free to disengage. It's like having a conversation, or like reading a storybook - only on a different scale. You don't have to pick a genre or a topic you don't feel good about.
