((An artifact made by a Daedric Prince has part of their own essence in it, so you cannot really say he turned it into his own artifact because that would make no sense. He would have to deconstruct it, somehow replace Malacath's essence with his own and put it back together again, which I don't think someone would be able to do. I think that Hircine was able to somehow get it in his own possession, or got one of his own followers to get it for him. From there he was able to trick people into thinking it was his own artifact.
The only problem I have with this headcanon is the fact that Malacath could send his own followers to get it if he wished to which makes it a bit tricky. Plus not only that, the Savior's Hide made by Malacath is said to make you vulnerable to magic whereas the Savior's Hide made by Hircine makes you resistant to it. Maybe Hircine somehow was able to change parts of it or put his own mark on it? I don't know. I very very highly doubt he could actually deconstruct it but who knows, I asked a Loremaster but he said he has no idea about it either. Â
Let's just ignore all these problems and just say Hircine was able to get it in his own possession and from there no one questioned him when he said he made it because everyone loves Hircine and nobody loves Malacath.))Â
