16,17,20!
16.) Did you learn anything about your sexuality this year?
Nope. It’s pretty settled.
17.) What are some hobbies that you developed?
I didn’t so much develop any new hobbies, so much as I rediscovered my old ones. My plants, for one. Oh, I had forgotten how much I love plants, how happy they make me. Hiking and running, getting that back has been a great joy. There’s something beautiful about running until you can’t think about anything but your lungs, your muscles. Painting again. I’ve never been particularly good, but I’m not particularly bad either. So far it’s been small projects, like painting a desert scene on the back of a denim jacket. The next project is painting a star scene on my black Chucks. I’m planning on restarting yoga and dance too, when the vaccine is more widely available. Getting healthy again has been a slow, uphill climb, but I’m happy to do it.
20.) How did this year treat you in general?
I’m luckier than a lot of people right now. I have a stable place to live, even if it’s not an ideal situation. I got a job that pays more than the one I lost. I’m being considered for an even better job that will pay me enough to have independence again, + health insurance. I’ve managed to avoid the virus, despite the fact I work in a grocery store right now. (Much as I am not a fan of this ‘small town’ thing, it does have the upside of not having really any local outbreaks, just a few cases) The chronic dry eye I was experiencing cleared up, and I was able to get contact lenses again, and they make transition lenses in my prescription now! Peripheral vision and sun protection!
And, while I know it’s a bit much, this marks a year and almost seven months sober for me. I maintained it despite a pandemic breaking out, despite unemployment, and again, despite my less-than-ideal living situation. There’s been moments of temptation, but always I had the voice in my head reminding me of how shitty it actually made me feel. It’s small, but I take a lot of pride in that.
So really, while this year has not been stellar, it’s been better than a lot of other years.
