It's the way disabled people are marginalized within our very laws (oh you put $2500 in your bank account? You don't get help from the government anymore.) and when you talk about disabled people everyone gets so uncomfy. Vs other forms of activism are so trendy and everyone wants to be on the right side of history with them
THANK YOU!!!!!!! The absolute rejection of the Disability Rights conversation or any conversation mentioning Disability in general is stunning.
You’re spot on with everyone wanting to be on the “right side of history” but ignoring Disabled people. I’m well aware that performative activism exists and runs rampant in today’s world but there are still significant changes being made for other Social Justice issues. There are still celebrations and acknowledgements for those communities. Disabled people get nothing. And many Disabled people are multiply marginalized and are often discriminated against in their own communities. Every pocket of humanity has an underlying disgust and sense of contempt for Disabled people, and me saying that will get people defensive but I don’t care anymore.
I just don’t know how to get anyone to care about acknowledge the fact that Disabled people are treated as less than human and it’s socially accepted and celebrated. But when I say that, people all but roll their eyes and say, “well nobody means it like that…” because God forbid I, a Disabled woman, call out ableism.
Thank you for your allyship & friendship, Catherine!! ILY girlie <33
