“The way I’ve lived I know I’m lucky to be alive.” - Doctor Chelli Aphra 💥💥💥 Today’s Asians in Star Wars portrait & my #womancrushwednesday is Doctor Aphra, rogue archaeologist & basically the morally bankrupt & very ethically compromised Indiana Jones of a galaxy far, far away. In such a rich world, it’s weird to me we didn’t already have more academic types like journalists, historians, researchers, & archaeologists running around! So Aphra fills a role that just makes sense, and it’s refreshing she’s such a loveable scoundrel but one that doesn’t secretly have a heart of gold. 🏺🏺🏺 She’s sharp, driven, snarky, selfish, and unpredictable - & she was so charming, she broke out of her supporting role in the Darth Vader comic to lead her own series. She’s the first non-film original Star Wars character to get an ongoing Marvel SW comic, and that feat is even more notable bc she’s queer & designed to look Asian! It’s kind of a reflection of how much quicker the non-movie SW materials are to be both inclusive & take risks. Though I’m just starting to really get into Aphra’s books, I heard about her when she debuted & read up on her bc of the positive reception & the fact that she looked Asian. 💥💥💥 I also wanted to post about Aphra bc her new comic series is out today & it’s being written by @crashwong, who is honestly one of my favorite Asian American writers (and writer, period) working now. It’s a brand new story, so if you wanted to jump in, now is the time to do it! P.S. Aphra is a Doctor bc she has a doctorate & she has 2 actual murder droids that are basically the evil versions of C-3PO & R2-D2.
