Book Review: Ashlords by Scott Reintgen
Plot: 5 stars Characters: 5 stars Writing Style: 5 stars Cover: 5 stars Representation: 3 stars Enjoyment: 5 stars Audiobook: 5 stars Overall: 5 stars This is one of the books I was looking forward to most this year and it did not disappoint. I was dubious about the claim that it was "Hunger Games meets the Scorpio Races" because... those books couldn't be more different. But when I go to describe the book now that's exactly what comes to mind. But it's also wholly original and beautiful. Like in the Scorpio Races, this is a race on magical horses. Only here the horses are phoenixes that are summoned at sunrise and die before the night is out, only to rise again. For each rebirth, the rider performs alchemy - mixes powdered components in various combinations to give their phoenix the attributes they think most likely to get them ahead in the race. The race is brutal, like the Hunger Games, and not everyone comes out of it alive. We follow three POV characters through their experience of the race and its lead-up. Pippa: The daughter of two champions of the race. An Ashlord - the race who rules their country with the help of their brutal gods (The Madness, The Dread, etc). Forced against her will by her mother to cheat in the races by asking the help of the gods. Widely considered to be destined to win and feels the need to prove everyone right Adrian: The son of a man trying to start a rebellion against the Ashlords. A denizen of The Reach, whose ancestors broke from the Ashlords years ago and renounced their gods. If he wins, the Reach will rise and spark a rebellion to pay the Ashlords back for their years of iron ruling and the deaths of the children of the last rebellion (including his mother). Imelda: A Dividian, whose ancestors came to conquer the Ashlords and were broken instead and now live subjugated and impoverished. She could never afford to race at all, but she is chosen to be the Dividian scholarship rider after a video she made goes viral. She knows she can't win the races - she isn't meant to, and seeing the luxury that the Ashlords take for granted makes her angrier still We also have Quinn, a spirit from the underworld who helps Pippa and who serves as her conscience, planting seeds of compassion that perhaps will grow in the next book. With these three POV characters with vastly different backgrounds, but all driven by anger, we find ourselves viewing events from three angles instead of rooting for one character to win. The action is intense, the worldbuilding is imaginitive, the stakes are high, and I was kept on the edge of my seat. The ending raises the stakes even higher while still leaving me unsure which of the three to root for. All of them? None of them? The only complaint I have is that there are no queer characters, but since only one relationship is mentioned at all, it's not a huge deal. There's always potential in the next one... The audiobook narrators did an excellent job and I thoroughly enjoyed listening. Â Â Â Â Â

Ashlords was LITERALLY a breath of fresh air. Holy cow y'all this book was SO freaking cool! Phoenix horses!!!! This book also gave me really good Hunger Games vibes but felt completely like its own thing.
I loved the concept of the phoenix horses dying at sunset and rising back up at sunrise mixed in with alchemy. The alchemical part was pretty cool as well that it gave them unique talents or armor or weapons, but never felt overpowered. The fact that ashes could be poisoned or you could be completely unprepared or do it wrong with the material or timing.
The background of this world was also really interesting! From the Dividans, The Reach, and the Ashlords. It makes the world feel rich and full. The gods too being within the world and active. I just want to learn MORE especially about Quinn and where she originally is from.
I liked all three of the characters! Imelda's anger and cleverness. Pippa's drive and ambition and her hopes. And Adrian's duty. The only two things I didn't particularly care for was: Pippa's chapters being in the second POV because I wasn't sure what it tried to accomplish unless to put the reader in the headspace of an Ashlord but I don't think it was executed well; Adrian, despite being old enough to drink if I remember correctly called his father "Daddy" and I just HATE that lol.
Anyways, the race was super cool. The world fascinating. The characters great. I absolutely want to read the sequel.

Blog Tour + #Review: BLOODSWORN by Scott Reintgen!
Welcome to Book-Keeping and my stop on the TBR and Beyond blog tour for Bloodsworn by Scott Reintgen! This end to the Ashlords duology just released on Tuesday, and I canât wait to tell you all about it. Read on for all the details, plus my review!
About the Book
title: Bloodsworn (Ashlords #2) author: Scott Reintgen publisher: Crown BFYR release date: 16 February 2021
Three cultures clash in all out warâagainst each other and against the godsâin the second book of this fantasy duology thatâs sure to capture fans of The Hunger Games and An Ember in the Ashes.
The Races are over. War has begun.
Ashlord and Longhand armies battle for control of the Empire as Dividian rebels do their best to survive the crossfire. This is no longer a game. Itâs life or death.
Adrian, Pippa, and Imelda each came out of the Races with questions about their role in the ongoing feud. The deeper they dig, the clearer it is that the hatred between their peoples has an origin point: the gods.
Their secrets are long-buried, but one disgruntled deity is ready to unveil the truth. Every whisper leads back to the underworld. What are the gods hiding there? As the sands of the Empire shift, these heroes will do everything they can to aim their people at the true enemy. But is it already too late?Â

My 5-Star Review
I first discovered Scott Reintgen when the first Nyxia book was announced, which I wanted to read not only because it sounded awesome but because I knew he was a North Carolina writer and I always want to support my home state authors. I absolutely loved the Nyxia trilogy (see my tour post + review for Book 2 here), and as I said in my review for Nyxia Unleashed, âI have a feeling heâs THE teacher in whose class all the kids want to end up! And he is now an author whose work I will always follow.âÂ
And follow I have! While I have not yet read Scottâs middle grade Talespinners series, Iâve read all of his YA books and absolutely love his writing. While the ideas behind both the Nyxia trilogy and the Ashlords duology are creative and unique and so much fun, I think that his characters are the absolute best part of his books. His history of teaching creative writing and ELA to high school students informs every book he writes, in that he writes stories specifically so that his students can see *themselves* in these books. Again, as I noted in my review for Nyxia Unleashed, âI love knowing that Scott honored his students by creating characters that are representations of their personalities, their histories, their struggles, and their triumphs.â His characters are diverse in race, sex, personality, history, and thought, and I have loved them all.
I actually hadnât yet had a chance to read Ashlords last year, so I binged Ashlords and Bloodsworn for this tour, and what a blast I had. Ashlords focuses on the awesome phoenix horses and the Races, with hints of the political intrigue and history of the Empire, its peoples, and its gods, while Bloodsworn takes us straight into that political intrigue and the war for the right to control the Empire. The Ashlords are trying to defend their role at the top and quell rebellion from the Longhands, the Longhands are trying to overthrow Ashlord rule, and the Dividians are trying to both avoid the crossfire and also hopefully carve out a place in the world that doesnât keep them oppressed. We meet new characters (hello, Bastian!), learn much more about the Empireâs gods, and follow our three main characters into battles and even into the Underworld. Soon Pippa, Adrian, and Imelda find themselves working together toward an attempt to burn down the world they each inhabit and build back something better.
I love the message behind Bloodsworn: that we can and should throw off even centuries of tradition, confront and acknowledge the parts of our history that are bad, and work together as a united front to build a world of true equality. Itâs not easy work, but itâs necessary work, and we can each do our part to make something better. I hope that even if you pick up Bloodsworn just for the story, youâll also pay attention to that underlying message and take some hope from it. I think it is a message we sorely need right now.Â
Before I end, Iâd just like to say while I loved this series as a duology, I am *all about* a prequel story to learn about Bastianâs history and a companion story to learn about Farianâs future, please and thank you :)
Rating: 5 stars!

ARC Review: Blood Sworn by Scott Reintgen
Five enthusiastic stars!
I LOVED this book. It was so unexpected! Told once again from alternating POVs of Pippa, Adrian, and Imelda - an Ashlord, a Longhand, and a Dividian - the story is no longer about winning the races, but rather of winning the war. I wasn't sure about it at first, but there was a major twist around 25% in that left me on the edge of my seat for the entire remainder of the book. The ending also brings everything back around to echo the beginning of Ashlords as it wraps up which is very satisfying. The start of the story has Pippa leading the Ashlord army, Adrian leading the Longhands, and Imelda accompanying Bastian and his crew on missions around the edges of the war. At first, everything they learned (especially Pippa) during the Races seems to have been shoved to the backs of their minds, but with the reappearance of Quinn, everything changes and you really get to see all three of them shine as it becomes very clear that they've grown since entering the Races. I also loved each of their POVs and thought the moments chosen to switch were perfect. And there were some great moments of sleight-of-hand and distraction in this book, where they mislead both the characters around them and sometimes even the reader. It was very well done. I've read 21 books so far this year and this one is absolutely my favorite so far. *Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Children's for providing an e-arc for review. Ashlords by Scott Reintgen was a YA #bookofthemonth pick. Auntie of @civilizedreadingtribe sent me her copy. Thanks Auntie! (I love Bookstagram đ) âEvery year the Ashlords race their Phoenix horses. In this yearâs races, eleven riders will compete, but three have more to lose - a championâs daughter, a scholarship entrant, and a revolutionaryâs son. Who will attain their own dream of glory? Or will they all flame out in defeat?â This is going to be one of my favorites this year. Itâs a great story and race keeps it moving. I like that Reintgen doesnât spend half the book with world-building - we get enough as we go along to give us the right amount of context. Thereâs plenty of uniqueness to the story. Reintgen gives a great description of these Phoenix horses rising from the ashes every morning. Some great characters you can pull and cheer for (and yell at) An entertaining read from Reintgen. #ashlords #scottreintgen #bookofthemonth #yafantasy #sciencefiction #bookstagram #bookshelves #bookswithcharacter #bookhoarder #bookworm #sodacityreads #bookreview #hardcover #bookcollector #bookhaul #bookspines #goodreads #homelibrary #fiction #yascifi #thriller #bookcollection (at Ballentine, South Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFzgMqvArll/?igshid=vidx3vgexbfa
