I can only trust what I read in the letter you just sent. I had this sinking feeling as soon as that volcano went off. Some how I knew. I guess it’s a blessing you didn’t get that apartment. At least I know you are safe even if everyone else is gone. Our hearts are heavy. Many of us lost family and friends. I guess I’m lucky all I lost was my mother. Another guy lost all fifteen members of his family. His whole family, gone. And still I have you. I feel it more than I ever did, you are surely my wife in all regards. I don’t need a judge or a piece of paper to make it true. I’m too filled with grief to give you any of the usual details about our travels or the skirmish. I am well. You are alive. And I can’t ask for anything more than your continued safety.

I will write at the next outpost. I will likely still carry the shock and sadness, but perhaps I’ll be in better spirits to write you more about this grave endeavor. Surely you’ll receive them both together and can judge my progress.

I’m sure you heard the news long before this ever gets to you. I’m also sure they sent you some notice. I’m having a hard time really accepting it, but I didn’t sign up for an easy time. I’m here to protect our country, my family. And if it takes a few more months, then I guess that’s what we’ll do. After the defection, morale dropped. It’s inconceivable to me how someone as dumb as me can see so clearly and those fools have thrown everything away. Our whole way of life is on the line and they just... well, I’m sure you can hear my rant starting. You could always tell me what I meant before I found words, so I can only imagine what I would say without you there to tell me. I miss your voice. I miss you. I have dreams sometimes, you’d blush to know a few of them were less than wholesome.

I’m gonna marry you faster than you can imagine so that each one of them can become our little secret. If I had known it would be this long, I would have taken you to the court like you asked. But I still think something more proper suits you better.

How could just one day ever be enough with you? I hope it sustains the both of us through the hard weeks or months ahead. The Post called out the technology gap again, I don’t think there’s much argument, we’ll settle this soon. For now, it’s just us normals. That’s what we’re starting to call ourselves versus the influx of new recruits that we know is coming. I’m sure they’re gonna split us up and pepper us around, but for now I’m with the guys. We set off tomorrow for the southern bridges.

Good bye, for now, but check with my mom about the apartment downstairs. It’ll be perfect for when I get home.

When my father was young he talked about this place. The shining city of the west. It’s a shit hole. We’re well past the outskirts and not even in a part touched by the fighting until we came through and yet. I am so disapointed. I was thirsty to see this place, but it’s truly been stripped of everything valuable and not by our sides either.
