âASHE CULTURAL ARTS CENTERâ
Coordinated by Douglas Redd and created by Jamar Pierre, Terrance Osborne, Lidya Araya, Lionel Miltone, and Shakor and Ivan Watkins.
The AshĂŠ Cultural Arts Center supports artistic and community development efforts with an emphasis on the contributions of people of African descent. GoNola.com who includes this on their list of the 5 must-see murals in New Orleans describes the piece this way: â. . . a mural pulsing with images of the arts, culture and cityscape of New Orleansâ Central City neighborhood. The mural features local arts icons including Louis Armstrong and Mahalia Jackson and cultural traditions such as brass bands and Mardi Gras Indians. It also highlights a connection to Africa with the inclusion of African ceremonial masks.â The AshĂŠ Center is appropriately located on Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., a street renamed in 2006 after one of the outstanding civil rights leaders of New Orleans.
