The room was crowded with a near silent type of murmur. The chatter was easily spoken over and near impossible to pick out. There were people playing cards and reading books, the room was mostly busy, but everyone was still in their uniform. A lot of people were looking towards a young boy who had made himself the centre of attention by sitting on top, of the back of a sofa. It made him appear to be the tallest person in the room. The cushions around him abandoned by none who dared to sit so close. The boy was lively but calmly talking, with a bar of chocolate in his hand and several empty packets around him.

“And that’s why I don’t like dancing.” Spock finished. 

“Woh!” Liza one of the blonde science officers, who often worked closely with Spock said with a double blink “I would not like dancing if that was the case for my species.” There was a murmur of agreement .

“What reason is this?” Kirk asked with a gentle favourable smile, and a flirt in his eyes.

“Oh you would need the full story” Liza said calmly.

“I’m aware you are illogical when it comes to dancing. You should not let all your future work colleges know all of your illogical reasons.”

“I didn’t tell them anything illogical” Spock said shaking his head “it’s not my fault vulcans are freaks.” Ambassador Sarek blinked, and for just a moment his mouth began to open, but it was quick to shut and his face resumed it’s usual, logical, composure.

“While some species may behave differently to others that does not make them freaks. That is no way to describe a species. If you had been studying your disciplines while aboard you would know that.” Sarek scolded.

“Well as a species living on vulcan I can confirm that freak is well within their vocabulary. With this qualification, I’m now announcing that it is in fact they who are the freaks. Nasty ones.”

“Hmm” one of the men sitting on the chair opposite Spock nods.

“I don’t know if you should be so sure about that” Viki says “although I didn’t practice a dance like that in school. There are some similar human dances in our culture.”

“Eurk, disgusting” Spock said to her, Viki laughed.

“Are you drunk?” Sarek says suddenly and sharply, Spock freezes.

“Why aren’t you dead yet? You must be almost a thousand years old.” Spock says annoyed.

“I am only one hundred” Sarek says, but he doesn’t do well to disguise, the pain, or perhaps disappointment in his voice, it was hard to tell with a vulcan.

“Well, I’m thirty two and you can’t punish me” Spock said, and with that he drops the chocolate bar from his hand, thudding to the sofa cushions, and he rolls over backwards off the chair, stumbles and flips himself over as he runs to the door. He is quick to get back up and proceed with his exit. Sarek looks how he always looks, unknowable fury just beneath the surface, peace faded in the abyss.

“He is technically underage” Sarek says to Kirk.

“I cannot believe this myself” Kirk says apologetically “who of you, gave him alcohol?”

“None of us” Viki said.

“Who gave him the chocolate?” Sarek asks.

Viki’s eyebrows meet in the middle with a frown “I did, but there is nothing wrong with a child having a treat occasionally. Even a vulcan one.”

“I believe there is when it intoxicates them.” Sarek said. Viki paused for a moment, and then she looked back to the chocolate on the seat and then towards the others.

“This would make you drunk?” Viki asked gesturing to her own chocolate.

“If I consumed enough it would intoxicate me.” Sarek confirmed.

“Oh” a cute noise comes out of Viki’s mouth in shock, as she places one hand over her mouth.

“Ambassador, I am so sorry for what-” Kirk beings to apologise for his crew.

“Do not worry” Sarek says lightly putting one hand into the air “it is a mistake many of his relatives have made as well. The only one to blame here is Spock.”

Kirk smiled “I’m glad you’re so understanding. If you don’t mind I will go wrestle with Spock, and sober him up. You’re free to use any of our facilities if you wish, and your quarters are located in room 24, I’m sure Viki can help you find your place or answer any of your questions.”

“Of course Sir” Viki nodded, and gave a smile to Sarek. With that Captain Kirk gave a final nod, turned sharply on his heel, and made his way in the direction the young vulcan had tumbled.
