Pride had picked up on the point that Greed seemed to like having stuff. Not just the books that used to be Fatherās, but other things too. Things that wereĀ āusefulā or things he said heād wanted. Pride tried telling him once that he couldnāt carry enough bags for everything. He wasnāt really sure it changed Greedās mind about it. Or changed anything, really.
But he hadnāt heard it be used towards people. Let alone him.
He wasnāt sure what that was supposed to mean from Greed. In the city, heād overhead humans say similar things to each other, but they were different from him and Greed and how they were together. And he wasnāt a book either,Ā āā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦donātā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦..think I amā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦donāt understandā¦.ā his head tilted,Ā āā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦isā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦..this aĀ āgreed thingāā¦ā¦?ā

(From Greed - aselfunknown) āTake only what you need? Well, I need it all!ā
āThe Devilās Carnivalā sentence meme
ā......................why?ā he tilted his head and blinked at the other,Ā ā..................not......enough bags.....ā
Everything was a lot. It was probably going to be heavy too. Was this aĀ āGreed thingā? Like how always being hungry was aĀ āGluttony thingā and wanting to nap all the time instead of dig was aĀ āSloth thingā? Pride wasnāt sure he was supposed to get it if it was. He was sure he had some kind of thing of his own, other than shadows. Or being sneaky.
Pride frowned a little and looked around. There wasnāt much in the underground to have either. A lot of old books about alchemy that Father had, heād looked at some of them now that there was no threat but didnāt understand any of it. As far as he knew, none of his siblings kept much of anything either. Lust had some clothes to wear to trick humans, Envy had an old coat like Pride did to go out in sometimes. As far as he knew, Pride was the only one with any possessions outside of Father. A music box, and the few things inside of it, which wasnāt much.
There wasnāt really much else around his old home that heād thought Greed would even want,Ā ā...................all.................is a lot....ā
(Because this can't go horribly wrong at all... from Greed - aselfunknown) š

Nothing brought it on this time, it just happened.
Pride had stumbled up and off to somewhere else. Away from the destruction and rubble, from scorch marks and transmutation circles. From the slaughtered remains of the chimera heād found just yesterday in the tunnels above. His legs gave out and he finally let himself cry. Body wrecking sobs and cries until his throat went raw from his spot on the floor. It hurt, and he couldnāt stop it from spilling out no matter how hard he tried to put it back. He wasnāt even sure where to put it if he could gather it all again. The flood rose so high he was drowning and now it just had to come out.
Everything reminded him. Everything. No matter how far away he got it still reminded him. The quiet and the empty, how cold it felt. His nightmares mixed burning buildings and twisted corpses and the pain of his body being torn apart in his own skin, with gunfire and the smell of burning flesh and the cold eyes of humans looking for the next sin to burn away from their world. Pride couldnāt get away from it, and wasnāt even sure he wanted to. Too scared to stay and too terrified to go outside yet and leave.
He didnāt know when Greed had come to find him, just looked up when he did and waited. To be scolded, to be told a real homunculus doesnāt cry, to be angry with him. It never came, and he cried harder letting himself slump against the other as he sobbed. Cling and hold onto Greed in desperation because anything was better than the feelings inside. Crying as his voice crackled out. He wasnāt family, Greed made that clear, it wasnāt the same and it didnāt make the pain or the empty cold go away. His stomach felt hollow with pain, scraped out. Like claws from the chimera when heād watched them scrape the last of the meat they could from a carcus they were eating. There was no meat left in him, but the claws kept scraping for anything that was left.
His lungs. His heart. His mind.
Pride sobbed against Greed and let himself break, because no one was coming back home again.
(From aselfunknown - Greed!Ed) In a moment he'd been sucked into a flashback, his body acting without him wanting it to. Images on his skin, drawn in... in... his own blood? There was a gate, opening, swallowing him up. He blacked out, didn't remember a thing until his eyes opened again and he was, where was he? He heard a voice as he tried to stand. It was... familiar. It was trying to get him to stay put, that he may be hurt. āYouāre wrong, Iām fine. I know Iām fine⦠Iām fineā¦ā
There was so much happening, he didnāt notice the body until it started to move.
Pride had hidden from the fight, witht he man who looked like Father, and the woman, the boy and the man he thought were fake...the eye was gone from his stomach and his hands still shook as he touched his own skin to see if if it was really gone. The strangers looked shocked to see him, they called him a name that wasnāt his again, the Boy in Red was yelling, everything outside that heād seen and hearing screams and fire in the tunnels....Pride remembered covering his ears and shrieking until his throat was raw. The fighting was so loud then, he didnāt understand why, he just screamed until he coudlnāt and just cried, exhausted listening to the fighting...
And then it moved, Father left, they followed him. The people in the room didnāt know where he was, theyād left him alone. That was when he saw the movement from the body and jumped. Shadows sprang to life under him and stretched along the wall behind him, eyes opening to stare at the threat. Theyād lashed out at Father, heād be furious with Pride when he came back. His stomach lurched at the thought but the eyes showed him...him?
Slowly heād gotten up and walked over, making no sound and ready to run if it was another threat. Instead he saw someone who looked kind of like him. Pride felt a moment of horrified dread hit him at the thought that the Boy in Red was real too now, before he caught the strangerās hand, seeing the familiar red serpant curled there.
Greed.
Envy had told Pride about him, he ran off, he was melted he was...somewhere else? In someone? In Father? Pride couldnāt remember, but he hurried over as the other moved again. Gone for a long time or not, he was just relieved to see another sibling that was alive in the wake of the death of the others,Ā ā.............Greed?.............Greed, hurt..........stay still......ā he ignored the mumble that the other was fine and reached up to help steady him.
(From Greed!Ed - aselfunknown) āCan you explain this to me one more time?ā
Hmm... Starters
Pride felt his shoulders sag a little in defeat and he gave the other a pleading and almost desperate look. But he was so bad at talking, and even worse at trying to explain things. At this point into their conversation, Pride was amazed that the other was even willing to sit and listen to him still. For not the first time in the past few days, he really wished someone else was there. Was still there. Who was definitely smarter than him and could do a better job if nothing else.Ā
Everything still hurt, inside and outside, since the day of the fighting. Since he watched exactly what Father had been planning all this time, since he watched how dangerous and yet truely helpless humans and the military could be. Since Sloth and Wrath were killed, since Father was sent away, since Envy...
He rubbed at his eyes and sat back, struggling but trying again,Ā ā................gate open...........Father did it..............with humans........and me....ā he didnāt understand that part, just that it happened and there was a lot of screaming and swearing in his head from The Boy in Red, who was eerilie quiet now. Watching, Pride guessed,Ā ā................wanted..................god? I think..........lots of humans got hurt..............family is gone..........and you got here..............after gate opened..........but not my brother.ā that, was the hardest thing to wrap his mind around. A whole other place with others like him? Were they dead too or were they missing and looking for their Greed?
Pride frowned and tried more,Ā ā..............canāt................open gate.........donāt know it...........but Father did..............and then you.........and.......ā he gave the other another pleading look, he was just so tired. He wasnāt sure he was explaining it any better either.

The kid really didnāt get it. There was no way he could⦠right? It wasnāt as if he could hide how he really felt either, despite the words themselves, Greed picked up on the twinge of hurt that was there. That was for the best. He tried to convince himself of that anyway.Things were already fucked up enoughā¦
The homunculus found himself casting violet eyes to the rain of gold on his shoulder and running a hand over it without even realizing it. āNo kid, ya canātā¦ā voice quiet and vaguely distant. No one could, not even him most of the time. The ghosts of someone who had the same name as the one beside him⦠but wasnāt him⦠a ghost that was supposed to once have been the homunculus. Greed didnāt always know who he was himself. How could anyone else know him?
But the one thing that Ed would never understand, at least Greed was afraid he wouldnāt, was that there was plenty to read between the lines when he called him his possession. How many did Greed outright say that to? If Ed paid close enough attention heād realize he was the only one Greed outright claimed like that. Sure, if anyone came after anyone here in the Nest, Greed would rip them apart⦠these people were his possessions too but not like Ed was. Ed wasnāt to be touched by anyone, not even the others in their circle. Ed was special⦠special in a way no one had been since⦠since Roy.
Greedās answer spoke volumes, though the tone of voice gave Ed pause. It almost sounded like doubt... Ed pushed that thought away. Even if it had been, if Greed held a certain uncertainty in what he said, he didnāt lie. He believed it, and it could have easily meant that Greed was lost in thought.
He exhaled a quiet moan as his hair was stroked. Not many things felt as satisfying to him than they way Greed would automatically respond to him. Ed loved it. He also knew that was the problem, though. Ed knew his feelings for Greed went beyond like, and sometimes it blinded him from looking objectively at their situation. When he first fell into this world, he had had every intention on finding a way back home to his family and friends. Getting back to Al had been what he wanted most. Now... he already knew he wasnāt leaving. Ed had stopped trying to find a way. He wasnāt even entirely sure Greed would let him go, but it didnāt matter. This was his home. Ed couldnāt even find it in himself to feel guilty about it.
His lips brushed over Greedās collarbone. āThen explain it to me... if you want,ā he whispered. āI wanna know whatās on your mind.ā Ed moved his hand over Greedās chest before letting it settle on the sinās stomach. He had never said as much before because he wasn't one to push, and whenever he felt like they were getting close, Greed would pull back and the wall went back up. Still, Ed couldnāt help but try, put it out there that he wasnāt going anywhere, that he cared, that he would be here, next to Greed for as long as he could.

He hadnāt meant to stay out so late nor had he meant to get too drunk to walk back to Greedās. Time had Ā easily slipped through his fingers after the third beer, and by then another had been placed in front of him. Followed by a few more. Calling Greed hadnāt been his intention either, but Ed had the misfortune of getting lost when he finally decided to get up and leave the bar. Maybe it was his hazy mind or maybe it was those small, yet noticeable differences in streets and locations. Either way, the end result was the same. Ed needed to get home, and he had no one else he trusted to come get him. No other friends, only a few acquaintances he had met in passing.
His head had been resting in his lap to stop the vertigo he had ever since he sat down when he heard footsteps. Looking up, Ed let his vision settle on the familiar boots, then worked its way up before settling on Greedās eyes. There was actual concern and worry in them. Ed could tell that much even though he was drunk. It felt nice to have someone else concerned for his well being. It made his stomach do that weird little flip flop thing it did occasionally when Greed came near him. Even though the otherās facial expression seemed crabby and annoyed, Ed couldnāt help the soft smile that crept up over his face. āHey,ā he said softly. He managed a half-assed wave of his left hand before letting it drop back down. Ed propped his chin up with his right and tilted his up upwards so he could get a better look at those violet eyes and simply allowed himself to sit there for a moment and take it all in.
Greed had come to pick him up. Ed had known he would, yet having it actually happen made his stomach to that weird flippy thing again. Ā The empty street suddenly didnāt make him feel alone or isolated. He was in good company.
~
Ed rolled the dice and grinned. āHell yeah!ā His grin turned into chuckle. āTonightās the night ām gonna kick your ass.ā That roll had been his best all night. Greed still had the advantage, but now he stood half a chance of winning. Backgammon had been a game he had always heard about growing up but never got around to playing until recently. Games like this were a good deal about luck, though there was some skill involved. Ā It wasnāt like chess, though. That was all skill, and while fun, no where near as engaging as the anticipation of not knowing whether or not heād win or get his ass handed to him.
Either outcome was fine by him. They had fun, and Ed had discovered playing games with Greed often led to something he really wanted to see. Greed laugh. Not the regular one that most people saw. This kind of laughter was different. This time it reached Greedās eyes. Win or lose, that made the night worth it, and sometimes made it a little harder to catch his breath.
He sat up and braced himself on his arm. Ed moved his chips across the board, scooting forward on his knees to reach the five spaces for the second move, and waited to see what Greed would roll.
~Moonlight had woken him up. Given how much light spilled into the room, it must have been full tonight. Edās head laid against Greedās thigh, his one hand tucked under his chin and the other on Greedās knee. He pulled his hand out from under his jaw, yawned, and then glanced in the direction of the clock even though it was too dark to see the time. He must have fallen asleep on the floor.
Ed vaguely remembered sitting between Greedās legs and reading. The blanket he had pulled up over his legs was still in place with his left foot uncovered. He lifted his head up and looked behind him. Greed was still sitting in the chair, only his eyes were closedāEd had never quite figured out if he actually slept or only rested his eyes. Ed couldnāt stop himself from smiling at the sight Greedās face calm and relaxed.
He could get up and go to bed, but the moon was out, and it was late enough into the night that his body protested any thoughts of moving. Regardless of the fact that heād wake up sore, he snuggled back in, brushed his lips across Greedās knee, closed his eyes, and settled back to his original position. This felt comforting and safe. The possible stiffness in his joints tomorrow didnāt matter. Tomorrow seemed so far away.
Though, Ed knew it would be awhile before his mind shut down enough to go back to sleep despite the warmth of the blanket. Not with his stomach knotted up so pleasantly, surrounded by Greedās scent.
~
As much as he tried to be inconspicuous about watching Greed, Ed knew his stealth was lacking. Still, that didnāt stop him from periodically looking up from the book in his hands and getting in as many sneaky peeks as he could. Some days, Greed sat on the bed or the floor, or next to the window simply enjoying the view outside or maybe refining his plans to take over the world, but today, he had taken a seat near the window, looking out and clearly deep in thought. That happened now and then, and it made Ed curious about what thoughts were running through Greedās mind.
It had taken some getting used to at first. Not that Ed tried to compare Greed to the one from his own world, but it was impossible not to notice differences between this world and his. The thoughtful contemplation had been the thing to ensnare him the most. Because, whatever dark thoughts were passing through Greedās mind, Ed knew they made him sad. Was it so wrong to want to fix that?
The answer to that seemed so simple and yet⦠he hesitated. It took him a considerable amount of self control not to fuss. Or prod for more information. Greed would most likely hate the fussing, and prodding might get him pushed further away. He wasnāt sure he could handle that. Not anymore. Whenever he imagined leaving or being asked to leave, it made him feel sick to the stomach and his heart hurt. Ed could take care of himself fairly easily, at least physically. Taking care of his heart often proved to be a struggle. He worried. Ed couldnāt help himself. He tried not to many times and failed. Logically, he knew that was stupid. Greed kept his possessions, and people fell into that category.
Given their situation, probably.
Ed turned back to his book, turning pages but not really reading. Heād give Greed space, but that wouldnāt stop Ed from trying to work out a way to make him feel better.
~
He didnāt want to get up. The bed felt incredibly warm, and it smelled good. The sheets and blankets smelled like Greed. Ed stretched out his arms and closed his eyes. He had spent some time trying to pinpoint that particular scent down, and came to the conclusion that it was unique to Greed. Maybe because this wasnāt his own world. Or maybe he had never bothered focusing on how others smelled before coming here other than noticing whether or not they smelled good.
It didnāt matter how it started only that it had started, and he couldnāt make that need stop. Whenever they had sex, he wanted to stay instead of going to his own bed. Ed wanted to stick around and feel Greedās warmth, press their bodies together so that his heartbeat could be felt. He wanted fall asleep with that pleasant scent next to him and wake up entangled in it. He didnāt need to say it, but he craved the chance to show how much he needed it. So he allowed himself a few minutes to bask in the warmth their bodies created. Ā
Ed knew that wasnāt fair to stay too long, though. Greed had every reason to want to keep things simple. It made perfectly good sense. Greed was immortal and Ed wasnāt. This wasnāt his world or his home. Al might find a way to bring him back. Ā He wasnāt sure he could tell Al no if the gate opened again. He wasnāt sure. Ā He couldnāt trap Greed like that.
His eyes opened back up. Ed looked at the ceiling and exhaled softly. His heart was still beating hard in his chest, only now for a different reason than it had moments ago. Violet eyes were watching him, carefully, maybe even cautiously. The thumping in his chest sped up, and his fingers dug into the mattress. Ed manged to pull off a smile in hopes of ridding that dazed look off his face because with the way he felt caught in that gaze, he must have appeared stunned and maybe a little lost.
He let his eyes settle on Greed one last time before reaching down to grab his shirt off the floor. By the time he grabbed his pants and pulled his shirt on over his head, he was already out of the room.
Maybe another night heād stay and see if Greed minded.
