It was no small relief that Bofur seemed to catch on to his desire to keep his wound secret, for as long as possible. If any of the others knew, no doubt they would worry terribly, and the added distraction and stress was hardly needed on this venture. Had it not been for the severity of the injury, the odd location of it, or the possibility of the damage growing worse over time if left untreated, Thorin would not have even mentioned it to Bofur.
With a short nod, Thorin went along with the toymakerâs request, offering his side to examination. He peeled away the ripped fabric of his shirt, hissing softly under his breath as pieces tore away from the wound.Â
"Orcs," he whispered in a low tone, partially to answer Bofurâs previous question; partially to distract himself from the throbbing pain spreading through his ribs. "While I was down by the river. A small pack, hardly worth a second thought." Thorin sighed shakily, turning his head away before he dared continue. "They have been taken care ofâŠ"
With more difficulty than there should have been.
His eyes traced over the damage, assessing what should be done. Heâd need to cleanse the wound, but closing it was a toss up between cauterizing it or stitching it up with needle and thread. If Thorin didnât wish to make a big fuss out of this (which was beyond the toymaker), cauterizing would be out of the question.Â
Wait, what?
Bofur immediately looked from the wound to Thorinâs face. Orcs? Here? âHardly worth a thought?â the toymaker repeated with a tone of absolute disbelief at how discarded the comment was. âYânearly got yerself killed.â He whispered harshly, feeling just a bit hurt that the great King under the mountain hadnât thought it was much of an issue at all. Â
Or thought to call for help.
Bofur dropped his gaze when the thought occurred that if all had gone wrong, Thorin would have been felled without so much as any of them knowing, and where would that leave them? Where would that leave him?Â
He reached for his pack and pulled it to him, removing the half filled waterflask that hung at itâs side before rummaging through it to find his trusty sewing kit.
Perhaps his choice of wording could have been the slightest bit better. Orcs were a menace, no matter how small the pack, and that was a fact every single dwarf sleeping in that camp knew quite well.Â
"It was an accident, Bofur." True as that may have been, it was an accident that could have been avoided. Thorin had been careless. Arrogant. Overconfident in his abilities, to the point he had underestimated his opponents. He knew exactly what he had done wrong, and exactly when he had messed up, and now he paid the price. That, however, he would keep to himself as long as he could. No one--not even Bofur, needed to know their King had been so...so...
Foolish.
"I could have, perhaps, but I did not." He turned his head away, scanning over the camp, the sleeping company, his oblivious nephew some distance away--anything to keep his focus off that downtrodden expression crossing Bofur's face. The way those normally-cheerful eyes dropped upon sight of the wound was almost more than he needed right now. When Bofur went to search through his pack, Thorin nearly breathed a sigh of relief, as the attention was temporarily taken off of him.
"There is no sense dwelling upon what might have happened.." Â
