No Game No Life Review.
Hello Everyone! Welcome to our brand new “Eat The Cake Anime” blog. I wanted to start off our brand new blog with a review of one of my favorite new animes, no game no life. Before I start let me just say that the color and detail of this anime is absolutely gorgeous. I love everything about how it looks, the vibrancy of this is anime is rarely seen ever. Completely catches your eye from start to finish.
To start off, the plot of No game No life is a fairly simple one. The 2 main characters, Sora and Shiro, are step siblings who dominate the gaming world as the combined alias “Blank”. Now being as good at games as these 2 are, they spend a lot of time playing them so they’re not really fans of the real world. As Sora describes it, life in the real world is just a “crappy game.”Â
Sora & Shiro each carry different skills that have allowed “blank” to be unbeatable all these years.Â
Sora, despite being a stay inside gamer, is more of the extrovert of the 2. He does extremely well with reading other mannerisms and determining what their next move will be based on their body language. He is also quite manipulative. He has a talent for making others do what he wants by making them believe it was their own idea (oh snap inception)Â in the first place.
While Sora is smart himself, it's Shiro who is the true genius. Although very quiet and the introvert of the 2, Shiro at the age of 11 is beyond exceptional in games with logic and problems. She by herself defeated a chess program designed to beat grandmasters 20 times in a row. She likens chess to a game of tic tac toe. As well as being able to fluently speaks 18 languages, she is a master at first person shooters, able to easily tell the direction and trajectories of a bullet.Â
Each of their strengths cover for the others weaknesses which is why the always play a game together.Â
A point I should make is that these 2 can not be separated from each other. Ever. They’re extreme dislike of the real world and other people have made them completely and utterly dependent on each other, if they happen to be separated they become shells of who they are. Sora begins to spaz out not knowing how to handle himself in conversation anymore eliminating any evidence that he was extroverted, and Shiro begins to cry not knowing how to function without her big brother.
Now for the fun part. As I explained, they don’t go outside. Ever. In the opening episode they’re locked in a room playing video games surviving off of cup of noodles only to maximize game time, thats all they do. During a brief moment in the opening where they are taking a break from playing games, they receive an email from an unknown user. When they click the link a game of chess opens up on the computer. Chess being Shiro’s strongpoint, she immediately begins playing to defeat the program. After about the 3rd move, the program makes a move that sacrifices it's own pieces, which is a move only a human could make. Noticing the challenge, Sora and Shiro team up to defeat the program.Â
After they’ve won the game, they receive another email asking what they would think about “a world on a board, where the rules and goal was clear, what would you think about that?” Sora responds with “If there’s a world like that, then we were born in the wrong world.”Â
As soon as they hit send, the screens go black and the world and mysterious figure reaches through the screen to invite them into a brand new world.Â
They enter into this new world free falling and Sora is of course freaking out thinking he is about to die while a character named Tet is falling next to them casually explaining the world they have entered: Disboard. He goes on to explain that every single thing in this world is decided by games, from a nations borders to people’s lives and that he is the god of that world. He lists to them the “pledges” the 10 rules he created that the i world and the 16 different races inhabiting it have to abide by.
I don’t want to go episode by episode and ruin anything so I’ll just say that, once Sora & Shiro figure out how the world that they’re in now works, they make the decision to have as much fun as the can in this world playing as “blank” and decide after they’ve beaten every single race in Disboard they will challenge god himself.Â
Episode by episode I was amazed at the different games they would play and the extreme lengths they would go to for the win. Great for anyone who loves a good amount of humor with great mind games comparable to Death Note. I should also mention there is a bit of fan service in this anime, particularly strong in one episode but any frequent anime viewers will be used to this.Â
I completely recommend this anime for anyone whose looking for a change of pace from their usual anime lineup. Its a great refresher from watching any of the more popular animes such as Naruto, Bleach, etc.Â
Now Enjoy! Sit back and watch the awesomeness that is no game no life. Aschente!
