By your side again
The bouts of consciousness started to become more frequent, her heart rate that had weakened and gone into infrequent but dangerous spasms, despite the pacemaker, had started to become more steady. Only small palpitations cropping up as her body struggled mildly in its adaptation to the substance running through her veins, feeding her energy and allowing her cells to repair themselves in ways they never could before. Her body tasked with the secret job of bringing her back from the brink after being given the fuel to do it. The monitors still hooked up that hadn’t been turned off in lieu of only showing what was already known, a dying woman, showed returning function to her organs.
The only outward change that wasn’t the simple return of warmth and colour to her skin from returning function was the pricks of white hair starting to grow from spotty sections of her scalp. Invisible for now, but would grow out in the fullness of time with complete lack of pigmentation. Though her scars would last a life time, even they too would fade a little and soften over the coming weeks, causing her less pain and tightness. For all not in the know, which was everyone save for two, it was nothing short of a “miracle” or more scientifically an “unexpected alien phenomenon”.
Her memory was very limited on moments she came to. Mainly she remembered confusion, maybe alarm, some arguing, possibly on pulling the plug. She was dying after all, why waste the resources. She knew Belost’s face was peppered in there, she’d try to focus on him when she could, but she couldn’t get words out, even after the tube had been pulled from her windpipe. She still couldn’t stay conscious for long. The most she could do was stretch her fingers out to him, until the next time she could place her hand on his neck as he slept. One time when she woke up alone, she could turn her head and lift her arm to lay along her stomach, and though it hurt, it was not the same excruciating mess it had been before, though she couldn’t be sure how much medication she was on for just that.
All she knew was the next time she woke up, she could breathe in deep without struggle and the deep settled heaviness in her limbs felt lifted. There was a familiar weight on her thighs from Belost’s head but she knew he wasn’t in a deep sleep, his ears were too alert. It didn’t matter, she wanted as many last moments with him as she could.
Her only available hand lifted up and she brought it to his cheek. Having regained enough dexterity to stroke it over his fur gently. When his eyes cracked open quickly, she managed a small smile and spoke in a quiet but rough voice from its lack of use. “Hello, gorgeous. Fancy meeting you here.”
