My new Shirt for TeamFourStar!!!
Check it out! I’m super proud of this one! https://twitter.com/teamfourstar/status/768880502107275264
Mighty No. 9 First Impressions
Graphics:
–Almost appealing and not even close to polished. Even some objects in the background have jagged and low resolution textures. Breakaway objects explode or crumble in under two seconds and immediately pop out of existence without any rubble or debris left behind. Nothing appears to standout in a creative or intriguing way that makes the player want to know more about the world they are in. There are voice overs (albeit typical anime v.o.) but there’s no accompanying facial or even body animation to help convince the player that story and aesthetic weren’t an after thought.
Gameplay: (There appears to be more abilities that can be unlocked eventually but no way to purchase or unlock these early.) –Run, jump, dash and shoot similarly to the old Mega Man games with a few minor tweaks to the system that often hinder stability more than help. Once an enemy is weakened, you may either continue to fire at them until they disappear or dash into them to collect their…essence? Collecting these allows for Beck to fire blasts of the former enemy’s associated element, but I’ve never found this to be useful. Dashing to obtain these “power-ups” usually ends in Beck dashing at a set distance which is just far enough to end up in one of the many various instant kill environmental hazards. Every stage I’ve played so far has instant kill E.H. and they have always been placed in the most inopportune locations. At least 3 times, I’ve defeated the enemies in an area and started to run into the next area just to die instantly exactly when one of the Doctor characters chimes in to warn me about the pit of purple bad stuff in the next area that will kill me.
Narrative: –It’s MegaMan but I really don’t care about anyone. Sure, the original MegaMan didn’t have a super compelling story at first but this game actually has “cutscenes” that lack all charm thanks to limited/no animation, typical to poor voice direction, drawn out uninteresting dialogue and nagging instructions by off screen characters for almost every in-level event.
Verdict: –Play the Mega Man Zero games for GBA, Mega Man X and Mega Man: Powered Up. Heck, go play Cave Story even though it isn’t Capcom related, it still leaves a better first impression. The only reason I continued to play after so many cheap deaths was to see if this game gets better. If it isn’t already something to brag about, then that should never be an excuse to continue playing a game especially when you’ve already paid for it.
