Ai WeiWei
I found the movie Ai WeiWei interesting because of the number of risks he took in China that could easily have gotten him killed. Ai WeiWei using Twitter as a way for communication was very interesting to me because of how good the photographs were. The composition was well done even though they were taken spur of the moment and helped illuminate the struggles of Chinese citizens that never have a voice. China has many human rights violations and I found it interesting that the earthquakes which caused many children to die in poorly built schools was where he put the focus. Documenting and recording all the names of children in an art piece was super powerful and helped signify the major loss that could have been prevented if the schools were built securely. I think it is very powerful that he still had hope for his country and wants to see China succeed. When Ai WeiWei was beaten by a police officer he actually went through and documented his whole process of filing a police report. It was a major step to show he cares because he was actually taking action rather than just saying the system is broken. When he painted the Han Dynasty vases over with the Coca Cola logo, I was a little shocked. Defacing historical artifacts is something I find very conflicting because in some ways it is creating new art but in other ways its destroying human history. History is very valuable, but it is extremely relative and by defacing the vases he is creating new history and defiance against the Chinese government.
