I grew up a Jehovah’s Witness. It meant I was up early on weekends knocking on your doors to spread the “good word”. I even gave a few speeches discussing biblical passages at the Kingdom Hall. Not only did I not celebrate any holiday but I was forbidden from participating in the pledge of allegiance at school. As a JW you are not allowed to take part in nationalistic activities. We had in our house a vhs tape from the church that documented the lives of witnesses during WW2 who were given purple triangles by the Nazis alongside the stars given to Jews. Because witnesses are pacifists, they chose the path of martyrdom instead of resisting capture through violent means. Witnesses cannot be soldiers. Even as a kid that didn’t sit right with me. I could never march to my demise willingly if the option to fight was on the table. Some part of me was already a soldier inside, a person willing to punch bullies in the jaw rather than live under their boots. My sense of right and wrong just didn’t sync with the witness life. The best thing for me was leaving the church. The next best thing was becoming a soldier. We, soldiers, may be utilized moronically and irresponsibly by the public and politicians as we saw with our blunders in the Middle East, but the idea of a person throwing themselves in harms way to protect those they love is noble and good. So I ask that if you ever care to respect us and what we do, stop allowing us to be utilized for profits or political gain. Stop throwing us into foolish wars that leave us damaged without good reason. My next door neighbor, Jack, is an Army vet. He served in WWII and asked for my help restoring the belt he wore during his service. He always brags that this belt got to go to Paris! Jack is about as kind and true as they come, so of course I was honored to help out. . This was an easier fix than some of the restorations I’ve done, but the end result is equally as exciting! I think restorations will always be my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE thing to work on. I have a few cool ones coming up that I’m stoked about, but this one definitely fueled my fire today! Had to share. . Link in Bio Hey folks. My Dad had a serious heart attack a couple of weeks ago. He is currently in the hospital and looking at some pretty serious procedures to fix his issues. I wouldn't have known about this if I didn't call him. He was terrified (and still is) of unsightly costs that insurance won't cover. He waited over two weeks to get help because he was afraid he would be denied coverage and care. He served his country and laid his life on the line. He deserves better. ALL VETS deserve better. He is going to kick my ass and yell at me when he finds out I made this, but the man needs help. Our country needs to do better by him and all our veterans. Right now though, Dad needs some security that he can maintain his autonomy. Please donate any amount you can, share this fundraiser and write your congress representatives.
