Religious fundamentalism: The process of isolating out a religion’s core doctrine and investing it with ultimate authority while rejecting all later developments as superfluous or heretical; e.g. Salafi Islam, Karaite Judaism, fundamentalist Christianity.
Religious conservatism: The preservation of a religion and its customs as they have been passed down over the centuries by the clergy and wider society; e.g. traditional Catholicism, Orthodox Judaism, Hindu traditionalism.
Religious modernism: Altering a religious tradition to adapt it to new social, political, cultural, and scientific developments; e.g. modernist Christianity, Reform Judaism, ‘neo-Hinduism’, Islamic modernism.
Fundamentalism and conservatism do not have anything inherently to do with religious politics and likewise modernism does not necessarily mean the removal of religion from public life. I will get to politics soon.
[L]et us say that somewhere in the distant past your religion has its source, whence it issued as a mountain stream, later becoming a river and meandering through the plains on its way to the present, accumulating and depositing a great deal of silt in the process. What part of this course do you consider normative? At one extreme you might ascribe value only to your religion as it emerged at source, in all its pristine purity; this is the upstream option. At the other extreme, you might ascribe value only to the religion as it was passed on to you by your elders and betters, whom you see as having preserved, not polluted it; this is the downstream option. Put in more familiar terms, the upstream option is religious fundamentalism, whereas the downstream option is religious conservatism. Thus the Protestant fundamentalist and the Catholic conservative may be equally devoted to their respective religious heritages, but they want to do very different things with them: the fundamentalist to restore his heritage to its original condition, the conservative to keep his heritage the way he found it.

I use the terms “Islamism” and “Islamic fundamentalism” in distinct senses. By “Islamism” I mean “Islam as a modern ideology and political program,” and I use the term synonymously with “political Islam.” By “Islamic fundamentalism” I mean [..] the choice to return to the original foundations of Islam. It is a contingent fact about the world we live in, and an important one, that many Islamists have a marked fundamentalist bent and that many with such a bent are also Islamists. But there is no lack of exceptions. An Islamist like Fethullah Gülen, who takes much of his inspiration from Ṣūfism, is not a fundamentalist; apolitical Salafis are fundamentalists in many of their beliefs and practices, but they are not Islamists. Moreover Islamists are, as I see it, a reasonably well-defined group; fundamentalists, at least in the Islamic context, are not.
