The Death of Chevalier Bayard
The Death of Chevalier Bayard depicts the death of Pierre Terrail, seigneur de Bayard at the Battle of the Sesia in Italy in 1524. Fatally wounded he had urged his retreating French soldiers to abandon him. He is show receiving the homage of his enemies, the troops of Charles V.
The Chevalier de Bayard, born Pierre Terrail, was a prominent French knight known for his exceptional valor and adherence to chivalric ideals during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Serving initially as a page at the court of Charles I of Savoy, he quickly gained recognition for his combat skills, particularly during the Italian Wars, where he played a key role in battles like the Battle of Fornovo and the defense of Naples. Bayard was celebrated not only for his military prowess but also for his magnanimity and sense of honor, as illustrated by his refusal to profit from war and his generosity towards his troops and those in need.
