Sadly the idea of Vikings running around in horned helmets, and gleaming mail, armed with swords, and all manner of axes, is a romanticised one. While armour was required for all free Norse men, it came down to how rich you were, and what you could afford.

Generally most (read poor) Norsemen would wear a gambeson. A tunic made from several layers of linen stuffed with wool, and have a shield, made from linden wood, or fir, alder, or poplar, with a simple skull cap. 

If he was a little richer, he might be able to afford leather work armour.

However it should be noted, that there is little, to no conclusive evidence that a Norseman might have used such padded cloth for armour. It is just as likely that a poor Viking could have gone to war in everyday clothes, with only a shield for protection.   

If he was really rich then the Viking could afford actual mail, and metal helmets, as well as swords, and maybe even an iron rim around his shield.
