Colouring in Procreate Experiments: Shadowheart
Enjoy this series of drawings showcasing my battle with colouring in Procreate using gradient maps. First pic is the greyscale drawing, then my first, second, and third attempt colouring it.
I struggled to find the balance between spending time rendering the greyscale base, vs fiddling with the gradient map to have the range of colours I wanted, vs the time spent rendering on top of the gradient map. None of these 100% got where I wanted imo but I like documenting the journey!
One of my key gradient map learnings from this? Make sure your greyscale layer is fully opaque. For a long time I couldn’t figure out why the gradient map colours weren’t applying everywhere, and it was because in the first greyscale drawing I used the eraser tool at varying opacities, and the whites were coming from a separate layer below. Combining these fixed it. Seems pretty basic but I didn’t realize 😅

This is a study I did over a year ago that I'm still really proud of. I don't usually do studies to this level of finish in my sketchbook. What makes this extra special is that I sketched this with a yellow pen, and then I built the shading up with just 3 pencil crayons, and the high lights are a white posca. So there was no erasing for this.
Dont think I've ever shared this here, florida armour study, it's pretty old but hey
I tried to keep it as close to the OG as possible :]c
No he does not have the bullets he carries on his chest, I wanted to focus on the armour :]
Artist: Astri Lohne Title: Armour Study “The past dozen or so paintings I've worked on have been incredibly challenging and difficult to finish - my observation and painting skills feel like they're rusted and stuck, if that makes any sense at all. Whenever I feel like this I know it's time to get my shit together and start doing regular studies again, no matter how busy I am. After all, the ability to observe is like a muscle, and needs to be trained often to keep itself strong. With this one I wanted to get a refresh on basically everything I paint often, with a focus on armour rendering. I've included some breakdowns of the things I remembered/discovered in the process of studying this, mostly to hammer it into my own brain, but hopefully it can help out some of you too c: Reference courtesy of Douglas Herring https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ab/1e/98/ab1e98eda318a34c549052dafd57a6ec.jpg” Brilliant...
