Charlotte reaches out to accept his handshake, and though he pumps her arm three times like a man of the world—like a man of egalitarian society—like Cal, good God, once upon a time—his fingers are frigid in her hand. “Elba Callahan,” she lies. “Doctor Lowry, I need to know everything you know about that horse.”
