Around here, it was basically brought about as a pre-vote gimmick by our very conservative chancellor. She does these things a lot to take voting points away from other less conservative parties - so while the end result worked out (even if the chancellor ultimately voted against it), it has a bit of a weird aftertaste.
Oooof yeah, it sucks to know that they still donât actually care, your entire existance is just a bargaining chip.
Our Prime Minister is reasonably centre when it comes to social issues (at least for a guy from a right-wing party), and heâs publicly stated on several occasions that he supports SSM, but he still bows and scrapes to the fuckers in his party who are further right and who are adamantly against any sort of social change that doesnât directly benefit them at the expense of everyone else.
(this is, of course, due to Australiaâs current record of having five prime ministers in ten years due to the fact that they keep pissing off their parties and getting kicked out of the top job by a party vote)
